View Full Version : Good idea gone very wrong

So I graduate from college on Saturday, and as a treat decided to get a manicure. It's been over a year since my last one, and this time I decided on a very lovely burgundy color....well after I got home, Estrella seemed pissed to say the least about this change...
5 minutes, no color, and a bloody nail bed later (which he is quite keen on licking!) :x ...He is fine with it! What a waste
Has anyone else ever had this problem?

well, i'm not a big one on keeping my nails polished..and i guess that's a good thing, because the last time i polished them (red) peaches went right for 'em!
so if i do polish them it will only be for a special occassion.

Yeah usually my nails are just as is, no polish or nothing...but I thought with my graduation and Christmas coming up it would be nice.
The last time I had them done, it was for my 21st birthday.

Before I forget:
CONGRATULATIONS, CHRISTIAN!
I rarely, if ever get my nails done. And when I do, it's usually such a pale, understated neutral that I doubt even the most observant parrot would notice ;)
However, last Friday I was offered a free manicure while I was getting highlights. For whatever reason the nail tech talked me into Opi's "Lincoln Park After Dark", which is a lovely deep burgandy color -- probably similar to what you chose. I had decided to stop by Todd Marcus Birds Exotic the next evening while running errands. I was asked if I wanted to play with a canary-winged parakeet and when he was asked to step up onto my hand, he took one look at my nails and onto the floor he went!
To be fair the poor 'keet likely didn't want anything to do with anyone and not just me... but I can't help but think those deep, dark nails had something to do with his hesitation ;)

I've never had a problem with nail polish in my flock, but then again, none of my birds are hand friendly so I don't think I would notice much of a difference anyway . But I guess Estrella could definitely be objecting to the change in your appearance (specially if he considers your hands his :)).
I guess he could also be objecting to the smell of the polish as some lovies are very sensitive to smells. Does he seem to notice if you're wearing perfume for example?
Anyway, those birdie brains are really a mystery  . I'm sorry Estrella didn't like your polish (it did sound like a nice colour).
:clap :clap BTW many, many congratulations on finishing college :clap :clap .

Congratulations, Christian!
I too, get my nails done and I stay away from red at all costs....I usually get a french manicure, and these days they even have different colors of acrylic (even red) to do the tips in instead of the traditional white. As long as I don't have red, there's no problem. But if I get red done, WATCH OUT!:rotfl
For my "holiday motif" I actually have dark blue tips with sparkles in it and snowflakes airbrushed on it. Baby could care less:rofl: And I always get the gel overcoat as its the most durable, especially if you have "finger biters" in the house.......

Congratulations Christian!!!!!! :clap :clap :clap what a wonderful accomplishment!! :)
I too usually do my nails with neutral colors, if at all. However, Kiwi definitely hates RED >: , so I don't bother spending the time to put it on. do you think they run our lives?????? :omg: :( :lol

Yes, big congratulations to you, Christian!!!! :clap My nephew (who is 32!) is graduating from UT on Sat. and I'm driving up Friday so that I can go to his graduation. We never dreamed he'd make it out of high school and are so proud.
OK, here is my fingernail polish story: I decided, for the first time in YEARS, to go with bright red. It was the day before Valentine's Day and I though, what the heck! Oliver freaked out.....I mean really freaked out. :omg: He is fully flighted and has always stuck to me like glue and will come to me when I pat my shoulder. He would not let my hands get near him! :lol I had no idea what the problem was till the next morning and then I realized it had to be the polish so like you, off it came! I'll bet it took me an hour to get those layers off and my hands and nails remained pink for days! Big Boi and Shy did not mind the nail color at all but poor little Oliver was horrified. No more red nails for me! :D
Hope Saturday is a great day for you! :)

Thanks for all of the congrats! It is exciting, but not too exciting as I start graduate school in January..oh well!
Yes, like Janie's Oliver, Estrella is on me 24/7, and as soon as I took him out of his cage, he freaked out about the color! He even stood on my head and observed, or should I say supervised, while I took the color off!

Uhh, all this talk about nail polish----not that I never wear it, but I always make sure I wait a day before handling my birds because I don't want the smell near them-----someone mentioned the smell, and perfume----isn't that bad for birds and supposed to kept away from them? And what was used to take off the color while estrella was on your head?? not nail polish remover I hope----the strong smell of nail polish remover is not supposed to be near birds, and I would think not in the same room. I would definitely recommend using that stuff in another room from birds-----and once your nails are done, I would also wait a while before letting birds near your hands because of the smell.
I know I tend to be very careful about smells and my birds, but aren't strong smells supposed to kept away from them?

Oh I should have clarified...I took it off with nail polisher remover, while he was in the other room..and washed my hands quite a few times and he observed this action...I think I washed about 5 times before he decided I was clean again:)

Christian,
When I got Molly back in 2004, I had acrylic nails. I soon had them removed and now I only get pedicures
:clap Congrats on graduation! :clap What are you studying?
My mother adores red nail polishes and cooper is especially angered by those red polished fingers when they get near her cage. She tries despretely to bite them.

First of all I am sorry that your manicure was a waste, but I am glad you posted this. I don't polish my nails often, but everyonce in a while I will get a manicure and normally do get a dark color like red or something. I hadn't thought about this subject as it hasn't come up yet. Thanks for the heads-up!!
Secondly CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I know you said that you are going to graduate school, and you should be very proud of yourself seeing as I have gone to 2 different colleges studied 2 totally different subjects, no degree and I still don't know what I want to do... You have accomplished so much (as I am sure you already know)!

that's funny. i bite my nails, so i wouldn't completely know. however, i think since francis sees me biting me nails, he'll bite around my nail bed too...i guess thinking i enjoy it or it's food! really hurts sometimes.
congratulations on graduating. i cannot begin to tell you how jealous i am. 3.5 more years to go for me :) and perhaps more because of the double major. ahhhh. at least i'll have my buddy the chew all of my papers while i try to study and hang on my pen like a perch. he keeps me real distracted.
I got my nails done just once 3 yrs ago, and i was quite proud of how pretty they were... and then about a week later i got this pink baby amazon who needed handfeeding and lots of gentle handling... i got irritated with the nails and got them removed, since then they've been short and unfortunately quite chewed up and unappealing :lol since then Evie parrot has been ruling my life, dictating what i do with my nails, necklaces, earrings, hairclips, buttons, shoes, etc... i have lost all hope of ever seeming well- groomed or put together. btw Christian, congratulations on graduating! i have one year to go, and i am counting down the months.
