I think all you can do is ask. They can't fire you for asking. I work at a bank and I can absolutely not work for another bank or an insurance company or a mortgage company... there is a section on it in our handbook.

You should work at one or the other, not both.
I used to work for one bookstore and we could not work at our "competition." Both are HUGE in the retail book trade so it really was discouraged. Nothing could stop anyone from leaving one to work at the other, of course.
Chances are you'll be busy enough working at one that you wouldn't have time for the other. At this time, I'd do what you already seem to have done: if you like the way one store is run better than the other AND they offer good benefits (health insurance is the BEST benefit you can get), go for it.
I had to laugh about the tanning salon. My niece is part Italian (her father's side of the family) and she always has that year-round glow. It did help her get a PT job at a tanning salon while she was going to cosmetology school :)

Having worked for both Petco and Petsmart at some time in my life.... don't do either! Both companies are notorious for not doling out correct pay, not giving the benifits they promise, overworking and underpaying employees, and of course there's the fact that they force employees to bend to their substandard animal care procedures.. of the two, the petco that I worked at was much better then the petsmart. If an animal was sick and I brought it to my manager she would take it to the vet and put it in the sick room to be treated- Petsmart if I brought a sick animal to my managers attention I could either buy it and treat it at home, or they would put it in the freezer to kill it . Petsmart also had NO training on bird handling and care, but allowed all employees to handfeed their parrots, at least at petco you were not allowed to handfeed until you went through a training course. Petco also had much better conditions for their reptiles then Petsmart, where they were usually in tiny cages with inadequete food, heat and lighting. At petco two-three days a week all animals were given fresh fruits and veggies that wanted it, including the birds, small animals and reptiles. It's not every day, like it should be, but it's much better then petsmart where it was never, or once or twice a month on days we were expected to have a lot of people. Petco would also give real nutritional food for the animals, whereas Petsmart would give crap veggies, using food that was sometimes even harmful to the creatures but would look pretty in the cage. We were also allowed to refuse sales to people we didn't think would be good owners, which I did several times, and never got in trouble for, even though every one of them complained to the managment. At petsmart, I quit because someone came in to buy a guinea pig to feed to a snake, something that is *CLEARLY* against petsmart rules (they supposedly are not allowed to sell ANY animal that will be used as a feeder) and when I refused the guy blew up at me and started yelling. Sooo here come's my manager, and instead of backing me up and escorting the guy out of the store, he yells at me in front of the customer, and sells the guy the guinea pig at half price. I quit before the sale was even final.
Lots of animal lovers flock to petsmart and petco to look for Jobs, thinking it's a chance to work with a lot of animals and animal lovers. Unfortunatly it's not. They don't care about their animals, and they don't care about their employees. IMHO you would be much better off looking for a vets office or a boarding kennel as a kennel tech.

Oh it was. When I was told to put a sick bearded dragon in the freezer I took it home instead, and did that with every sick animal I came across. But other employees would follow through with orders and whenever I found animals in the freezer that had obviously been put in alive based on their positions, I would report it, but was either told A) it was a painless death akin to euthenizing and was "more humane" then allowing the animal to suffer sick B) "I'm sure it was an accident"
I didn't work at petsmart for long. I couldn't take it.

My coworker said he worked at petco and told me never to work there because they apparently brain wash people into believing they know everything about pets
