my female lovebird makes little whining noises once in a while. when i let my lovies out to play they seem happy and always fly off together and eat in the food i leave for them. but eventually the female will go back in the cage and start making small sad crying sounds...it breaks my heart to hear it and just want to know wats wrong??

also how do i get the "pet smell" out of my room...my dads complaining?

Often its difficult to describe various noises birds make so others can understand and maybe help interpret them. "Small sad crying" sounds would have me very interested in finding what type of physical activity takes place while she's making them. If their short low audible successive muted chirps (hows that for a description >o) then its very likely this is just normal breeding behavior. Really, it would be quite rare for a lovebird to create sounds that would indicate a "sad emotional state". Pain on the other hand (as in toes or other appendages being caught in something) would produce a sound best described as very alarming. Sickness would likely produce none at all. Perhaps you could be more descriptive in the sounds she's making along with any corresponding activity that takes place during the time she's making them (one clue is she's returning to her cage "nesting site" before making them). This may help in better determining what is going on.

Regarding the "pet smell". When properly maintained, most parrots along with their necessities (cage, toys, food, dirty underware, etc) generally don't produce much of any noticable smell to begin with unless you have several of them in an enclosed area. Even then its still not that bad. What are you using as a liner for the bottom of their cage? I would also check to see if maybe there's spilled water and food anywhere. Sometimes lovies will bathe a little when no ones around leaving the resulting moisture where it can cause some odors. Let us know what you find 8o..............:)

I've also found that vitamins can have a very pet-y smell. Do you put out any sort of vitamin? In the water, perhaps? Or pellets?

I think I know the whining sound you are speaking about, and if it's the one I'm thinking of it's not a negative thing. I'm not sure what triggers the sound, but I know a lot of my hens make it when they are calling their mates and warning othes to get away. I have a couple of other lovie who make this noise while they are playing with their toys. I would just try and watch your lovie when they make this noise to see if it coinsides with some behavior or mood.

they play out the cage and fly around for a while and then she goes back to the perch they sleep and rest on and she makes the noise the male bird is always out the cage when she makes it

the smell isnt horrible..it just makes it noticable that pets live there....it might be the food cuz they spill alot of it...i didnt see any water at all onthe bottom ...is the smell maybe coming from bird soilage?

Besides my one lovebird, I've temporarily cared for a few really big poopers. We almost always used papers of some sort and never really had issues with the smell. When I first got Goof though, I mistakenly used corn bedding which did give off a smell of its own. One reason I asked about what you use to line the bottom was the remote possibility you may be using this type as its definitely not good for birds. Beside mold and bacteria it can also give off a smell. Other than that, I'm not sure what would cause any odor unless your dad has a really BIG nose :clap. Say, are you by chance using plastic food and water bowls? Sometimes those can get a little stinky.

we have one lovebird, a dog, a snake and a saltwater tank - no one who comes to this house ever notices any smell. Kiwi's cage is changed daily, water -twice daily, paper towels twice daily if really poopy, so there is absolutely no smell associated with him. Try changing the cage more often, cause I can't really see what could be causing that smell. Good luck! :)

My female lovvie makes soft noises, and they do strike me as being vaguely sorrowful. She only makes them when she's due to lay an egg. She'll sit on her nest and make that pretty whine until she falls asleep.

Noticed any nesting behavior? ;)
