I have a 2 yr old velcro lovie. To say he is bonded to me is an understatement. Because I sometimes work long hours, I finally decided to get him a companion. I kept the newbie quarantined then moved the cages close together. They talk to each other, but outside of the cage Joey doesn't want anything to do with it. My new lovie is about 4 mos old. Unsure of sex, but the breeder thought it to be a male (same as Joey). If it gets too close, Joey goes after him with beak open and tries to attack him. I knew there was slight possibility of this, but I never wanted two birds in two cages. Because Joey is so bonded to me, I'm not able to give the other little bird as much attention. What should I do?

OMG we are in the same boat!
My Keiko is bonded to me and I have my new bird in a different cage but I SO want them together but Keiko will bite Mardi's feet if they get close and boy do I cop it if I pay more attention to Mardi..Keiko has a squarking fit until I pay attention to him.
But when their cages are together they chirp happily to each other so I am hoping they will get to bond soon.
I am trying not to let Keiko out of his cage as much now until I get both of their wings clipped next month.
My new lovie is three months old and keiko is about nine months old.I don't want two cages either as I got a huge cage for both of them (which Keiko is in now) and really don't want two cages clogging up my house.

The only advice I have is to wait a little longer he might decide that he is OK with it. But chances are you are going to have 2 separate birds in two separate cages. If you current bird is very aggressive with new bird you might even have to do different out of cage time for them. I know it is not easy having two cages but sadly lovebirds do not always do what we want them to.
