View Full Version : Desperate for birdy prayers

Well it seems our bad birdy luck just won't stop. Many of you may know of our rescue alexandrine Bumpy that we've had for the last two or so years. Well she has been under the weather and we took her to the vet on Friday where xrays revealed she has a badly mishapen egg stuck in her ovaries, which she is unlikely to pass.

Bumpy will require surgery to remove the egg and her uterus and its scheduled for Thursday. The vet is giving her less than a 50% chance to live given her age and the complicated egg placement. We are having the procedure done by a vet who is not our normal avian vet and has only done this procedure twice before. The only avian only vet in Oregon is out for major surgery so she can't do it. Our only other recourse is to take Bumpy to Seattle from Portland, which we have decided against for a number of reasons. We like the vet who we are working with, and he has been very open and upfront about his experience and willingness to refer us to a Seattle vet. While he's had limited experience doing this procedure, he says he feels comfortable doing it and our avian vet regards him highly as well. So this, him being only three blocks from our house, and our belief he will do everything he can to save Bumpy are some of the reasons we have decided to have him do the surgery instead of going to Seattle. We think he will do the best he can for Bumpy and that's all we can ask.

Honestly, I'm not the praying type but this is different. We could use all the prayers we can get. I haven't mentioned this on the board but we lost our oldest and most beloved lovebird Zimber late last year to a tragic accident and it has almost paralized my husband and I. The thought of losing Bumpy so soon after is unbearable to say the least. While we have a bunch of birds there are a handful that mean the world to us and Bumpy is one of them. Mostly, she hates women and adores my husband, but I so love her and how happy she makes my husband.

So please pray for Bumpy and our flock as we fight this long hard battle to save her life.

Like Kim, I'm sending prayers and good thoughts your way! 50% chance of survival still beats 0%! Are you and your husband planning to be at the vet's office during the surgery? My vet will usually allow me to be with my bird right after the surgery so that they wake up with me there for them.

Linda: I never thought of that. I have work and practicum that day but will ask if my husband can be there. I am the first woman Bumpy has ever tolerated but she adores my husband so it would be best if they let him come as they love each other so much. I think if she makes it through surgery it would be great if he were there.

I am so scared! I love my Bumpy, my Beeazlebump, my Bumpaliscous, and my Grumper Bumper. We can't imagine life without her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone! Your well wishes mean the world to me, my husband and Bumpy......Well we finalized the surgery date and time for Thursday. Bumpy's blood and liver tests came back, and were normal for a bird in her condition though her iron is a little on the low side. However, it wasn't really low enough to put her on a supplement at this time.

The vet gave us the information to an avian specialist in Seattle. However, we are sticking with this vet. I confirmed the vet is comfortable and knowledgeable enough to do the surgery and he said he was. I believe him for a number of reasons and feel he will do best by Bumpy. If we went to Seattle we wouldn't be able to meet the vet or see the place ahead of time and Bumpy would have to stay in the hospital untiil she were well enough to travel. I'm not okay with this cause in my head if Bumpy makes it through the surgery, her best chance of recovery is having my husband close by and visiting and being with her. They are very bonded and she adores him.

Thanks again and I will let everyone know how it goes

Well Bumpy made it through surgery. My husband spoke to the vet and it seems that Bumpy's egg was outside of the uterus and had broke open. So the vet cleaned everything out but couldn't remove the uterus at this point because it would have been to much on her body and she wouldn't have made it. I am happy she made it through but we have a long way to go. I am rushing out to head over to the vet to see her. She has to stay in the hospital tonight, and this is still a critical time.

Thanks everyone! The vet called and said Bumpy did well overnight. She ate in the night, took her meds well this morning, is poopin, and seems pretty alert. He wants to keep her for observation today but we should be able to bring her home this evening  .

The vet is also doing a culture and sensativity on the egg yolk from her body to see if it is infected, which will help determine her after treatment. She is already on lupron shots due to him not being able to take her uterus out.

Oh, I believe her diagnosis is egg yolk perintitus
