View Full Version : Wondering about a change in climate

Every summer my family and I take a trip up to Michigan, where most of my mom's relatives are situated. As this is Kit's first summer with me, I'm new to bird-travel (we are still debating taking her with us or not).
So we've pretty much got everything else figured out about how we'd take her, what we'd take with us, where we'd stay, etc.
One of the last questions I've got is whether the change in climate from South Florida to lower-peninsula Michigan would be problematic for her? I want to make this as stress-free as possible.
As it's summertime, I don't think there'd be much of a difference from here to there, other than less pollution and lower humidity.
What do you guys think?

Hi Rowena,
You are right when you say there may not be much of a temperature difference. However, will the places you are staying be air conditioned as everything is here in FL? Other than making plans on how to handle that part, I would probably take Kit with me as long as arrangements could be made so that he's comfortable. Echo, my male Abby, loves to travel and he will chirp/sing most of the time I am traveling. I started taking him with me on short trips to get him used to being in a car and now he loves it!!

We've stayed at the cottage up there before, and it does have the same full air conditioning. I didn't think of that!
Kit absolutely loves car rides, and we'll be gone for two weeks, so I couldn't imagine leaving her here.
Thanks for the reply, Linda!
I read somewhere that birds can get motion sickness (wouldn't have expected that one  ) and that a slice of ginger in the travel cage would help. Is there any truth in that statement, do you think?
I know ginger is supposed to help soothe stomach aches in humans, but I'd never thought of giving any to the fids.
I have relatives in Michigan, well, my uncle's wife's family! I was lucky to visit when I was 16 for 6 weeks, stunning place! Sorry, that wasnt too related to your question, I dont know the answer to the question but I hope you get it sorted! :D

Thanks.
Yeah, we've gone up every summer since I can remember. I love it there! I don't envy them their winters though. ;) Waay too cold!
