Has anyone else's lovie decided to open the door to his/her cage and go flyabout? I thought I was seeing things yesterday as one of mine did just that. The clip on the cage door is fixed quite firmly yet he must work at it till it's loose and then pushes his way through to go and see the birds in the aviary next door. I tie the door open so he can get back in and when he's had enough, he goes back to refuel. Since then he's let himself out this morning (the door was pretty secure last night or so I thought) and I tied the door today whilst at work. Tonight I undid the tie out of curiosity, turned around, and there he was again, happily chatting to the neighbours. He's only a baby, about six months, but his mate died and I guess he wants some company.

I've never known a lovebird do this before - is this usual or is he just so keen for company? I'd love to let him in with the others as they're all related anyway, but am scared he'd be picked on. (There are six in the aviary but only two sets have paired up).

Mine are worse! Sunshine will lift and hold the door open for boo to go under then she stands under the door holding it up while sunshine flys out then she hops forward and the door slams, thats how i usualy catch them makeing a break for it as i hear the door bang shut lol, i tie it with thick twine while i am at work so i dont worry myself to death lol.
But now my tiel has found if dad hears a cage door bang noise he comes running to check it out so she has been flipping her food dishes up and down so it bangs the cage and makes dad come running, then alls that left is the head tilt and the look like "yes dad you needed something?" :D

These are very cute stories. Luna used to do that to her old cage that had a door that slid up to open, it didn't have a latch. All she could do was slide it up and down but she couldn't make it stay so she never figured out how to get out. The door to her new cage opens outward and down and it clasps pretty tight. She hasn't really tried to open it.

Many of my baby hand feds over the years have learned to escape from their cages a week after they fledge by watching me slide the door up and down a couple of times Then they come flying onto my head. :lol They usually only come out when I'm in the same room to come see me. But, I have to use clips for the majority of my cage doors.

A lady that breeds here local to me even has a lovie that has learned to come out of the cage when the she uses a lock.

Clever should be the lovebirds middle names. :D

haha! wow! they are funny and smart, huh? francis bangs the cage door up and and down, but can't quiet figure out a strategy to get it completely open so he can get out and come sit on me. however, i usually just feel bad when i see him doing it and go get him.

when i got miss dude, they told me they called her houdini because she always makes escapes, but since i've had her, she's never even once tried. happy, but kinda disappointed, i was looking forward to the action :) haha.

Thanks to all for their replies, aren't they amazing little birds? The door clips at the bottom and opens outward and luckily the door to the aviary clips to the side. Otherwise I'd be worried word would spread and everyone would be doing it and I'd be coming home to a scene from "The Birds" - I'd never get them all back in again, let alone in the right cages as I can't tell them apart any more! The signal from any of them that they want food (I don't neglect them, it just means they've spat it all over the carpet instead of eating it) is to bang their food dishes really loudly as if in a temper. In the aviary I had to put in an oblong plastic seed container as the parents got broody (those parents always seem to be feeling broody) and tried to make a nest in the seed cups. I almost weakened and put in a nest box as they can't quite fit in but I'm fighting the temptation as there's no room left! I find it incredible there's so much character in such a small package.
