It seems as though Jack is settling down a bit after the trauma of his wing clip. There are still the occasional temper tantrums and the nipping at the wings, but not nearly as severe. She does still hold them out away from her body once in awhile.
She flies, but short distances. And her favorite places to be (top of the curtains) are not easily accessible. It's actually kind of sad to see her look up high, crouch down like she's going to take off, and then change her mind. It's almost as if I can see the disappointment in her face.
I really never thought I would feel this guilty about a wing clip.
On the one hand, he stays on me more and isn't so hyperactive, but is this at the expense of his happiness and freedom? :( I feel like I traded Jack's ability and joy in being a bird for my desire for more closeness to Jack.
I understand the safety issue, and it would devastate me if Jack got out while fully flighted and I lost him.
Sorry for being such a big baby :very_sad: - just having one of those days...

I got this from Bird Breeder-Hobbyist a couple of days ago and have not had a chance to cross post it until now.

While they do mention the issue of predators, not all are easily visible and since predators depend on prey for survival, speed and surprise is how they find food so that they can live to see another day!

Jeni: Wing clips are not for every bird and its up to each owner to educate themselves and make the best possible decision for their bird and family....I also think the longer a bird goes flighted the harder it is for them to adjust and this may be the case with Jack. It may be that once Jack grows her flights back you will choose to not clip her, though I know it's nice to have your cuddly girl back and a little peace:whistle: .

Wow Jeni - I'm sorry to hear that Jack is still having a hard time adjusting. i guess this is one of those things that you don't know what the reaction will be until you effect change. the good news is that the wings will grow back soon - and you will figure out what to do for future clips. You have nothing to feel guilty about as you had no way of knowing that Jack would have such a negative reaction.

I do know that your experience has made me REALLY uncertain about clipping Kiwi. I have not done it yet, but am on constant vigil waching to make sure he doesn't get into any trouble.

Which way is better - i have absolutely no idea. i don't know either what kiwi would do if i clipped. for some reason, after all the life decisions i have had to make in my marriage, raising kids, this is causing me more than too much confusion. who knew that 47 grams of feathers could have such a hold on my heart - and I woudn't have it any other way!!!!!! :)

I still think she will adjust in a few more days.

Hang in there.
