Hi, I have a question regarding molting. Bea, my little 5 month old lovie, has been molting, her first! She has been flapping her wings lately and there is one flight feather that keeps turning. It smooths back in place but I was wondering, does this molting process hurt them? She has flapped like crazy in the past, kind of like practicing flying, but this seems different, like it bothers her. She hasn't had any injuries/accidents. I was just wondering if the consensus thinks I should take her into the vet. Otherwise she is fine, eating, sleeping, drinking, pooping, all just fine. When I had her out with me earlier I was specifically touching her wing area and she was fine. I know I'm just being a concerned fidma but I'd like your opinions. She is currently sleeping, as per usual in her hut.

The only part of molting that can be uncomfortable is the new feathers when they are coming in and are still in blood feather stage. Touch one of those feathers the wrong when and you will hear about it loud and clear!

The feather you are talking about may be one that will be falling out but it's not quite ready yet. It's not painful but it doesn't feel right when it's out of place, so to speak. There could be a bit of shaft damage to the feather but it's not endangering her health in any way. Now if that feather were bleeding, it would be definite cause for a vet visit. Otherwise, just be patient and she will either remove the feather or it will molt out on its own. :)
