Elmo is either really clumsy or theres something wrong..

sometimes he runs around his cages and perches really fast.. he will jump from one to another then, jump down etc.. etc.

sometimes he goes so fast he doesnt make it to his perch and falls straight to the bottom. i always check him to see if anything is hurt, but it's not. he just gets back up to where he was and starts again..

do i just have a stunt bird.. or is there something wrong with him.
he must definately be a boy right.. females arent that silly..

Mine do this, sometimes they just go so fast they miss perches or stumble over or slip off things! I always give them a little cuddle when they do though. Just yesterday Bobble was preening on the sucker perch on my mirror and then just slipped off! She also went to land on the metal coat pegs on my door the other day and kind of missed it and fell through the gap behind onto my coat, wings everywhere! Sticky does it when he aims for my head, he flies real fast and when lands his feet stay in my hair but he keeps going, then he kind of snaps back into place! When you say females arent that silly, its my female Bobble that does this more!

I think the biggest thing at work with Elmo's clumsiness is his age. He's young and still learning navigation skills. Even older birds can have this same problem. They think they have the perfect landing all set up but it doesn't quite happen that way. :)

Sometimes when he's standing on one foot.. I feel like I need to put crash landing mattress underneath... although he doesnt fall over.. My heart is in my throat.

He thinks he's invincible.. kind of like a child. hahahaha

Thing is, there's not a lot of room for a young bird to practice birdy skills in a cage even if its a good sized one. At least though, Momo is a very active lovebird, and thats one good sign he's a healthy lovebird..............:)

 That is so true! My almost 1 year old lovie Ducky runs circles (literally!) around my 14.5 year old lovie Squeaky!

And do young birds EVER sleep?

As Linda stated, it can take some practice before a young bird learns enough navigational (birdy) skills to safely fly about and land with confidence. Really, this is not something we need have a lot of control over, unless of course your lovebird learns how to avoid going back to his cage by flying away from you....>o.... Usually, this is a good time to check for any large windows, mirrors, or other obstacles they may run into causing injury. We like to call this "bird proofing" where we also check for anything they may get their nosey beaks into ...... Speaking of clumsy.......what I get a kick out of is when my lovebird falls off my hand while preening himself. You see, even though he's got great coordination he still gets a bit clumsy every now and then, especially when he gets carried away with climbing all over me. The funny part is, whenever he takes a tumble you can rest assured its MY fault by the nip or two I receive afterwards!.................
