Hi I have a 3 month old lovebird. He is very attracted to me. All he wants to do is sit on my shoulder. I know thats good that he wants to sit on my shoulder. I want to teach him some tricks, but whenever I try to do anything with him he runs up my shoulder, and when I try to pick him he is not letting go of my shirt. He is latched on with his feet and his beek.
Can anyone give me some advice?

Sounds like a normal lovie to me  Bo used to go inside my shirt & run around to the middle of my back when I tried to put him in his cage. I had to partially disrobe more than once to retrieve him. You might want to go the the Yahoo Group called Bird Click. It gives very detailed instructions for bird training & answers specific questions. I am reading the files there while great interest since I want to start my new baby of on the right foot & reclaim my position as alpha bird

i miss that so much.
My makalii used to latch on when he knew he was being put into his cage. he held on good to a finger! I miss him.
My new lovie will sit on my shoulder or play on my laptop, but hates my hands.

I would let him be for now. He is testing the waters on your shoulder to see if you are worthy of trust and so far you are passing the test. Once he is more comfortable with you, it will be easier to play with him. Try to enjoy the time he wants to spend with you on his terms. Forcing him to do too much too soon will break the trust and he may not want to sit with you at all.

Hi, Thanks for the help answering my question. But I have another question for you. How long do lovebirds usually test your trust?
My lovebird wants to come out of the cage all the time to be with me on my shoulders. I open the door and he walks out and on to my stomach and works his way up to my shoulders.
I think I have gained his trust a lot. He will event take food from my hand.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks

It sounds like he trusts you, but doesn't like to be touched. I only have one bird, out of nine, that doesn't mind being touched with hands. Some birds respond to sitting on a hand held perch more than sitting on hands, so you may want to try that.

you haven't had your lovie that long, and it sounds like you have already made great progress. there is no time frame for gaining trust and building a relationship - that is up to the individual lovie and you. he may never be the "hand touching" type of lovie. the key with lovies is patience - and then more patience. good luck - you're off to a great start! :)
