just a curious question. how much time do you guys give your birds to be outside of their cage? I usually leave it open when I get home and Joey will decide when it's time for him to go back in. That's usually a few hours, like 4 or 5. And on the weekends or when I'm home all day, I leave the cage door open for him all day so he can go in and out when he wants.

Of my four birds, Ivy my pionus is out at all times when we are home. I can go and do things out of the room, and even take a shower and she does good out and will stay put on top of the cages, so I can leave her out all the time. Pip, he is out while we're home as well, but I have to go do something where I'm leaving the room longer than a few minutes, I have to put him in because he'll harras the other birdies or get into something! My tiels I make special time for to be out where I can watch the others so nobirdy bothers them, so they are not out as much, but they have a huge cage and like their cage, so they don't really mind much!
I study full time at home and work once a week.. so elmo has out of the cage time when ever he feels like it.
Sometimes he will stay out all the time.. and others he just prefers to be in his cage.
When I do need to go, I will move all of this cage and play pen to the balcony and he just stays there.
The times I have had to lock him in his cage, I come home to a grumpy bird. hahaha.

Will and Grace have a large filght so they do not come out as they are not tame anyway, Jack their baby is out as soon a get home from work and in the morning as i get ready, and all day at weekends. Harry and Wilma, let themselves out, as some of you already know, but have bene good for the past few days and although I havent let them out as yet beign new to our family, as soon as they are in their new home, (which has been picked up and will be assembled tonight) I will let them out to get used to us as they seem the be a more livelier pair, unlike Will & Grace, who are content to just sit around and watch goings on.
I used to let mine out in the morning but as they became teenagers they wouldnt let me get ready as they were always on my head!! Now they get anywhere between 1 hour to 3 hours in the evening sometimes a very short time if im going out and at the weekends i get them out in the morning then midday then later for however long i feel. I used to get them out at lunchtimes but our office moved 40 miles away from home so i cant do that anymore! Unfortunately, seeing as neither like going back in their cage i cant leave them to come out and go back in as they will just never go back in if they had their way! :D
Also, i have been made redundant this week so birdies get me all day every day until i get a new job! :D

My Quaker is out all the time when I am home, and the lovebirds are out only some of the time--like when I am going to be constantly in the same room with them-- since they get into more trouble. But when they are free to come and go, Yellow Bird comes out more readily than Tourmaline, unless there is paper nearby. Then Tourmaline comes out like a Patriot missile and detonates on the paper source.

My flock gets 2 to 3 hours when i come home from work a bit more on weekends if i am not going anywhere i have to watch them closely as they all raise heck if i let them out seperately i have to let them all out at once which means constant supervision.
Thier cages are huge so they get lots of room to play and flap.

There's a good stretch of time during the day where Goof is out for about 6-8 hours. I also make it a point to take him out every morning between 7-8am, then for the big stretch from about noon on. Usually, he makes a complete nuisance of himself which to me is priceless :). Good thing I work part time throught the night otherwise I would never get anything done :rotfl.
Oddly enough, it used to be the moment his cage door opened he flew out as though shot from a rocket launchpad. Now there are times when upon opening his cage he makes little effort to come out but instead climbs down and waddles over to his launch pad for a small nibble of treats and a few peepers. Then, as if taking time to decide on the best location, he will then take off for a little roundabout before finally landing wherever his choice may be. Usually that would be me.............:p
Throughout the day he seems to enjoy checking out his cage every now and then. He goes in, eats some seed/pellet mix, bangs his toys or small mirror around, then back out he comes. He's even been in to check out his new cage several times :). I think I could use a little of his energy right about now.
