View Full Version : Taming Pairs of Lovebirds?
So whenever i tell people that I have a lovebird I am always faced with the shock and horror of how they 'should be kept in pairs' blah blah blah... I am very happy with my single lovebird and he is very tame and well bonded to myself...:)
Now for my question... Is it possible to keep a pair of Lovebirds and have them as bonded, handleable and tame with their human counterparts as I have managed with just a single bird?

in short yes it is possible, its will probably take a bit more time but nothing is set in stone it all depends on the personalities of the indivisual birds and their owner, both my pairs of PF and Fischers are getting used to me and becoming more and more tame everyday, I have also seen pairs of breeder birds so hand tame its amazing, even when they have a nest full of babies. These guys are full of surprises, but bottom line if you build up enough trust in them single or not, they will trust you 100% back
I ALWAYS have to explain to people that lovebirds can be kept alone as long as you give them companions.. and they are only called lovebirds because they go at it and have children more frequently than rabbits do! hahaha..
In terms of taming a bonded pair of lovebirds, it can be done, but not over night it will take a long time.. and depending on their personalities.. they may just prefer each other to you.. I know a few members on here have pairs and some of their lovies prefer them compared to their partners sometimes..
Are you thinking of buying another lovie because people get harassing you.. if so.. dont listen to them at all. lovies can survive with the companion of humans..
Thanks Guys! -- And no no no... While I can see how EASY it is to aquire MORE of these little guys, (because they are so **** cute!) In my case I'll take the quality over the quantity.

Attention is the key to keeping one or more than one lovebird tame/handleable. I have a cage of 4 youngsters and all I have to do is open a cage door. Within seconds, I have lovebirds everywhere! These are not just newly weaned ones, either. As long as you interact with them, they will remain tame and want to interact with you in return. The best thing about more than one is that you have double the fun! :lol
When I first got elmo every time I would go to pet stores to get toys or what ever.. I was always soo tempted to take someone new home.. but I didnt.. i resisted..
They're like pringles.. whats you pop you can't stop ;).. a pure example is linda ;) hehehehehhehe.

I have 8 larger parrots but I'm not curious enough to actually count the number of lovies..... I can tell you exactly how many are in each cage but I've not added all the numbers together. (Might scare myself if I did!)
It's a lot of work, everyone gets what they need, and that's what counts! :)

Besides, lovies being lovies, you'd have to recount (or readd) fairly often
I just have the one -- I couldn't imagine having a few more, or dozens more for that matter... This little guy can get into enough trouble on his own!

Too cute! Linda, now I am really curious about how many lovies you have!
The lady who bought two of my babies today called to say how great they are doing. They settled right into their new cage, explored their new happy hut, toys, food dishes, and were preening each other when she called me.
Now she wants more! So, it may be true for some of us that lovies are like potato chips - you can't have just ONE!!!

I think your bird will be fine. I have a single bird myself. I do worry if he's bored when I'm at work all day, but when I get home and open up the cage door, it's so sweet and cute to see him come up and want to play and sit on my shoulder. I do admit, I can see how addicting they are. My boyfriend bought 2 pairs in two weeks!!! I'm sure someday I'll get another, but not anytime soon. Maybe when Joey's a bit grown up and I've had more bird experience.
I cant remember for the life of me and i DO apologise... someone on here and their name is on the tip of my tongue.. has a room full of 20 lovies!!
When I get older and have a secure job.. I want to do that! hehehe. but I know if I ever get another lovie at the moment.. I will end up like linda ;)! hahahahaha.

:whistle::happy: The crazy person you are referring to might have been me.
We have ten adult lovies and we are now down to 14 babies... And, I'd really like to keep eight of them... (but I can't.) Some are getting to be VeryVelcro...
You are right. It does get noisy when they are all nap chirping! like they are right now! When I call home sometimes and I hear all that noise in the background it doesn't sound nearly so cute over the phone!
When I was talking to a lovely bird lady (who just bought two of my babies) her house was full of birds too so we were both trying to talk over all the chattering. :omg: I wonder if she noticed like I did? I just knew my little ones were going to a bird friendly place when I heard them all.
LOL. initially I was referring to LauraO, thank you heatherJ..
but all of y'all are coming out of the wood works now!!..
see its true.. once you pop you can't stop! hehehehe.
how do you all tell them apart?
