i think elmo might be a girl......

lately elmo has been chewing paper and sticking it in his feathers.. just above his wing/back area....

elmo doesnt strip the paper he just picks little bits and pieces off it.. and then rolls them into little stick things.. if you got a length of a paper and rolled it between your fingers... he puts it there.. but its as though he forgets it.. cause it falls out

and I guess me touching any of elmos stuff and elmo coming over as he seems me touch his stuff to "defend" it is a good give away too hahaha..

i have to say though.. he has becoming alot more accepting of me rubbing his cheek on him or back kisses... I no longer feel scared at all to put my face near his beak... ive had no bites. or attempts at bite at all in the last week or so. and he's jumped too me.. to sit on me.. with out me having to go over to him to pick him up for elmo mummy time..

could this putting paper in his/her back be a girl or boy thing?

Not neccesarily. I've heard and read that boys will tuck paper too. Some may not be as successful as girls but I've also read that a few boys can tuck paper just like a girl.

We can all guess until the cows come home whether or not our lovies are boys or girls, but there isn't a true personality test. A DNA test, or wait to see if there are eggs, is the only way to be sure.

I do the same thing with Peanut. Now that I have Maile and can see how she acts, I compare to 2 quite often and see so many differences in the 2 and think, oh that must mean that Peanut HAS to be a boy since he does this and that differently than Maile. But, in reality, all birds are different. :)

It is definitely a female behavior but male can learn to tuck paper as well. What makes me think you may have a female is the back touching. You want to avoid doing it though. It is a sexual stimulant to them.

My hen taught my male budgie how to shred paper. He is so infatuated with her, he would ANYTHING to please her.

That is one smart hen!!.. and one in lurrvve budgie!!..

I am kind of hoping elmo is a boy.. otherwise he is one lousy female hahahahaha!!.. I will keep check on the back touching.. thanks elle :).. before I could only touch elmo for a minute.. until he/she would get sick of it.. but at the moment.. no fuss at all.. i can rest my head on her back for as long as I want and elmo doesn't bother.. I thought she was just accepting me.. but it may be just the stimulation.. =S

I find it a bit strange because elmo is 7/8 months but hasnt really shown any signs of being male or female.. maybe its a both! hahaha... but as jally said.. each bird has their own personality.. maybe elmo is just a slow developer..

awwww, momo, glad elmo is starting to be nicer to you :)

oh yeah, when i was at the vet, she caught me petting joey's back and told me that's a no no cuz it makes him "happy" oops

well, guess we'll know if elmo is a girl when the eggs start appearing.

My Milo will chew paper into spit balls and then tuck them into his breast feathers. He's a DNA'd male.

in the past week elmo has been supppper nice to me.. has only gone to bite my fingers once!.. i no longer need to hide my hands when asking him to step up on my arm..

buy a paper doll.. wow sticks them into his breast feathers?... how does that work?..

at the beginning I was thinking that elmo was taking the paper to help scratch himself.. because he goes to preen himself with paper in his mouth .. and its as though he doesn't realise he's got paper in his mouth and drops it in his feathers.. and goes on biting more paper hahahaha.. strange little baby..

Kai tucks paper as well, he tucks it in then takes it up to Kira in the nesting box. Such a sweetie!
