Dr. Pepperberg in Honolulu

I can't believe all the years I was in Hawaii and nothing like this ever came. Dr. Pepperberg will be there in December and I am totally jealous. Hopefully, the few members in Hawaii will be able to make it. I hear she is great to see!

Dr. Pepperberg spoke at our local Mesuem of Natural History about 10 years ago (the director had a PhD in ornothology, wrote books about birds & went on scientific expeditions, so probably knew her & got her to come here) & I enjoyed her talk immensely. My favorite stories were about how Alex refused to work when he wasn't in the mood.

For example, one day she said, "Give me red." He gave her blue & said, "red'. She removed the blues & repeated the command. This time he gave her green & said, "red". When only red was left, she repeated the command. He said, "No" & turned his back. That was the end of that day's work.

They also tried to teach him to read. He learned a number of letters but didn't like to do it. After he had learned some & they were testing him by asking him to chose 1 of 2 letters, he was 100% wrong! That was the end of that project.

You can't make a parrot do anything it doesn't want to do :rotfl
