Kath is making those crunching noises that make me grit my teeth - sounds like nails on a chalk board! I understand this to be an okay behavior, but I'm just curious how she's making that noise, if anyone knows. What is that doing to her beak?

I had no idea birds could do that with their beaks. It sounds awful to me!

Beak grinding is a sign of contement and should be viewed as a very good thing. Birds do it when they are relaxed/resting or preparing to go to sleep. Pretty much, the mechanics of it involve rubbing the lower mandible against the inside of the upper one. Almost all birds do it (I don't have any that don't) and it's not a behavior that can be modified.

Hope this helps. :)

Hmm, well good, at least she's happy :) Guess I'll have to just imagine that she's eating something and not scraping her beak together . . . Guess I'm a little weird about noises.
