I am reaching out for help with Peachie over the holidays. I just found out that I will be having spinal surgery on December 22nd. I will be in the hospital from 10-14 days if everything goes well.
I don't have anyone to take care of Peachie for me. I can put her in a boarding situation at the avian vet's office, but it's really expensive and will cost me over $300, AND I was told that the smaller birds don't get the personal attention (out of cage time) that the larger birds do.
I have reached out to friends and co-workers, but none of them are fond of birds and the noise and mess.
I'm wondering if there is anyone nearby who could do me this HUGE favor and take care of her for a short while. I will be more than happy to compensate. I would rather Peachie be cared for by someone with a home and family, than the boarding facility at my vet's, even though it is technologically advanced and is overall a wonderful facility.
After all, this is my baby, and I want to make sure that she is well cared for and loved while I'm away. I will be thinking of her and missing her a lot when I'm in the hospital.
Feel free to email me wheeliegirl@cox.net.

How far are you from Omar's Exotic Birds? They offer boarding: http://www.omarsexoticbirds.com/boarding.html
Maybe a tech at your vet's office would be able to care for your lovie, in your home or theirs.
You can also search for pet sitters:
Pet Sitters International: http://www.petsit.com/
National Association of Professional Pet Sitters: http://www.petsitters.org/
HTH! Best of luck to you -- I hope that you have a speedy recovery!

Man, I know it's hard to be away from my birds for even a couple of days! I couldn't imagine two weeks. :(
I second Eliza's suggestion about the vet tech. My niece does this for people who aren't comfortable boarding their pets.
I sincerely hope we can help you find someone. If I weren't on the other side of the country, in the wrong Orange County, you could count on me to be there.

Awww, you must really love your little bird! So far I think everyone here that has responded lives on the east coast mostly, so we are too far away, but I would love to take her for you, and considering all you have to go through, I would not expect any compensation for it. Too bad we all aren't closer :( All the best luck to you though in finding someone and for a speedy recovery!

Bubblelady is on your coast and I keep hoping she will check in soon. I don't know how far she is from you but I don't think it's too far.... One thing for sure. She's closer than I am in FL!

Thank you, everyone for your kind words of support and suggestions. I've decided to take her to my vet's boarding facility (birdstuff.com). They have special ventilation so that birdies don't make each other sick, and the birds get out of cage time every day.
I can't have someone coming into the house to take care of her for reasons I can't really go into, as this isn't the proper forum for my marital problems. But still, if there is anyone in Orange County who may be able to take her, I'd really appreciate it. I know it's the holidays, and a busy time for all.
Thanks again, to everyone.

Holly: Good luck on your surgery. You will be in our thoughts so please keep us updated when possible. I'm glad you vet can take Peachie. I know there are a bunch of us, myself included, who would be more than happy to watch Peachie but we are so far away. Of course, I've come to love Peachie from years back so it may be a good thing I live so far away cause I'm sure you'd have to fight me to get her back:whistle::whistle:.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't been on for a couple of days so I just saw this post. Joshbirdlover lives in San Diego, I believe. Not the same county but not too far away--I think. But he is surely a lot closer than I. Good luck. Sorry that I, like Little Sir Echo, am so far away.

Holly. Even though we know many of our members would be more than willing to provide excellent care, should this not transpire, your current choice may very well be whats best. Especially if you feel your precious Peachie will be safe and sound upon your return. Like most of us i'm sure you will still worry about her, as will we worry about the both of you. Please take care. Prayers!

You are all so kind. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The hardest part will be missing her and her funny antics. When I uncover her cage in the morning she says "peek a boo!" and there she is, poking her head out of her happy hut. And when I tuck her in (cover her cage) at night she says her name over and over and over again. And of course there's everything in between. I find myself thinking about her while I'm at work. It's really hard to define the relationship I have with her to my friends and co-workers. They don't understand how I can feel affection to an animal, let alone a bird, who bites! She really makes me smile when I feel down. All I have to do is talk to her and I feel better. And whatever she says back always sounds happy. How can a person wrong by loving our feathered friends the way we do?
I'm confident that the vet's place will be the best choice if I can't find a real home for her.

I agree that non-bird people think I am insane.
Scary thing is ... sometimes my boyfriend seems like a bird person and talks baby talk to them. Now I should be happy he is coming along .... but..... something about seeing a man like that!..... not all that attractive.
Now, if he starts doing some cooking or cleaning for them.... then I will be happy!
