Hi everyone!!

We've had an artificial tree for the past few years.
This year I would like to buy a real tree.

Are Christmas trees safe for lovebirds? Is the smell toxic?
If Peaches nibbled on a tree branch would it harm him??

Thanks! Lisa

One of the 10 holiday reminder tips posted above in the In The Media thread:

Pine and fir Christmas trees with soft needles are the safest. Avoid sharp needle trees and artificial tees with metallic needles. Also be aware that many trees are treated with pesticides as well as chemically treated so that they will last longer.

I've always had a live tree, Frasier Fur, and never had a problem with the birds. Having said that my birds do NOT fly into the tree.... ever! I do walk through the room with them on my shoulder but they show no interest in the tree and I would not allow them to perch in the tree. I'm sure the ornaments, lights (wires) and sap would not be safe for them. If your bird is extremely curious and prone to getting into things I'd be very cautious regarding a Christmas tree.

I remember last year......it was our first christmas with Pip and I was worried about how he would be with a christmas tree.....he's just so mischievous! We had an artificial tree. Well, what I did was I bought a smaller tree that would be easier to just take down if there was any problems, but low and behold.......there was never any interest in the tree.....same as what alot of people here had told me about their birds. You'd think they would go to a tree, seeing as they are in them alot in the wild, and how colorful and sparkly it is! but maybe being a pine tree they stay away from the prickly things. I was surprised there was no interest in the tree, but it was up for some time and nothing, so now this year I can feel free to put up my bigger tree if I want because we all passed the tree test here last year!!

Thanks everyone for your replies!!

I never thought about the artificial tree being dangerous! We had one up
last year and Peaches never showed any interest in the tree! I just put him on
a branch to take a picture...he hated it! LOL!!!

For some reason I thought the smell was toxic..or if they chewed on the
on the branches it could harm them!

We'll make sure to spray the tree off outside to get off any chemicals!

Thanks again!
