Well I've definitely figured out that no matter how much you READ about lovebirds before you get one, you truly don't know anything until it's actually in your home!!

Yesterday I handled the bird a lot but today Im making sure to let it sleep and hang out in its cage, door closed. I've been sitting next to the cage reading and occasionally talking to the bird (no name yet - were working on it! harder than I thought to pick one that 'fits'). Yesterday I could pet the bird and today its terrified of me = ( I opened the cage door to change food and water and it didn't try to move until it saw my hand coming. I want to hold it and sooth it but I read that you're not supposed to grab them because in the long run it can do more damage so Im just letting it be. But Im sad!! I want it to need me and love me, lol. I know Rome wasnt built in a day but I hope that eventually it warms up to me and lets me handle it.

It was constantly handled by the breeder so shouldnt I be handling it to so the bird doesnt backtrack? or just let it adjust? im confused!!

he is in a new surrounding. It will take a couple days or so for him to settle in.

Your new baby is in a strange place, away from companions, hand feeder and, literally, everything familiar. While the breeder could handle your baby easily, it's because the bird knew and trusted her. While you know you mean no harm, birds have to learn that by experience.

Just be there and let your new baby adjust. It should not take very long, as the bird is used to being social. :)

i HATED when i brought kath home and she didn't want anything to do with me. after a few days of just talking to her quietly and making sure she could see us going about our activities, she started hanging out by her door wanting out. she still doesn't like to be right around us all the time, but she'll tolerate an open hand and a few scratches here and there. she's been here almost 3 months and still isn't too keen on a lot of interaction, so it does take time. i just try to make sure she gets some interaction so she doesn't get TOO wild.
