So i head off to a breeder that is about an hour away from me to buy another pair of Love Birds. I know what I want Violet Masked. I get there and there are sooooo many pretty birds and I just wanted them all.
So I bought four, see my reason is that they are young so we can't tell sex as they have not been mated or DNA so I had to buy four cause that increase my chances of getting at least one pair out the the 6 that I now have....
Yes that is my reason and I am sticking to it!
Anyway once settled I will post pictures. I am also going to mouse/rat proof their cage and the four I got today can do quarantine in that and when their 30 days is up the other pair can also go in there... or should I put them all in there at once (after quarantine of course)???
Oh they are so pretty. I got pastels I think so going to have to sort out my mutations

I did not end up getting any violets as she did not have any by the time I got there so i got two single factors and then two pastels but one of the pastels is a violet. Will post as soon as I can

Congratulations on your new lovies! They really ARE addictive, you know....
I would set up my colony after quarantine. Being territorial, I've found that once several birds are already in a cage, newcomers are not always welcome. If you put them all together after quarantine, no one owns the cage so you should not have any problems.
With eye-ring species, I've noticed a difference in eye shape that seems to indicate gender. Males tend to have round eyes, while females tend to have almond shaped ones. Look only at the eye, not the ring around it. While I would never guarantee gender based on this method, it's worked for me when I go looking for stock for my own aviary.

Thanks for that. I was attempting to get their avairy set up ASAP but now I have 30 days up my sleve so no issue. I also think that I have to catch them all to DNA them so I might as well keep them in the smaller cage untill then less stress on them being caught in the big avairy. I am starting to get excited about breeding them now.

Masked lovebirds are master nest builders! The more material you give them, the more they will drag into the box!!! If you give them a large box, they will fill it with material shaped into mazes that eventually lead to the area where the hen will lay her eggs. How well I remember opening the back of one of my pairs and finding nothing but material! :lol

I have heard this. I am looking into nest boxes at the moment as it seems over here depending on who you talk to depends on what box you should be using
