It's official, we will be adding 2 year old Oslo Sapphire to our brood tomorrow morning!!

 I am SO EXCITED words can't even describe. I am a nervous nelly as far as the quarantine goes, so PLEASE EVERYONE WHO'S DONE IT, tell me what to do. Literally word by word because I need to know!!! Right now I am planning on placing Oz in our computer room, Gus is in the living room. Again, please tell me what to do.

A little background about Oslo - the owner got him in August and has since found out her job is moving her to Florida and sadly she cannot take her birds (she has parakeets). Oslo came originally from an elderly woman's home who had him and his mate as a pair. A freak accident took place & his mate died, leaving him completely broken hearted and the lady so guilt stricken that she couldn't bear to see him alone so she re-homed to the current owner. Now he will be coming to OUR home and it will no doubt be his very last move for the rest of his life. She told me he has never bit her, is a very spritely bird and loves to talk to her keets. I could tell talking to her that she wants nothing more than for him to go to a good home and I am SO GLAD I can do that for her. She is very knowledgable with birds and while I was asking her all these questions she was asking me some hard ones too!! I, however, thought it was great that she was looking out for her little guy. She is giving me everything she had for him, cage included.

So yea, 11am tomorrow. Then were going to settle in and enjoy the day, take some naps - and post some pictures!!!! & under no circumstances let them go near one another correct??

:rotfl:):rotfl:):rotfl:) SO EXCITED!!

YAY fo new bird..

pictures are a MUST.. MUST MUST MUST ;)

I think quarantine involves the fid being in a separate room, not having connecting air flow with your fids. Also if your new fid touches your clothes, you must not take them near your other fids unless they have been washed thoroughly, I think the same goes for you. You basically treat them as if they've got the plague (not to their faces though haha)

lol- the plague.

Yeah- quarantine BITES! I've had to do it twice and it's not fun- but neccessary for both birds.
Gus needs to be safe from anything the new bird might have- but also, the new bird will be under stress and not as able to fight off normal bacteria from Gus that his system isn't used to.

Just make sure you take care of Gus first, before moving on to the new bird.
Keep hands washed, change clothing, I went as far as putting on a cap or putting hair up away from bird to bird.
If you have similar looking bowls, make sure you know who's is who's and sanitize every time you fill a dish.
Totally different air space, etc etc.

Alot of energy, like I said, but worth it.

Congratulations- he's a cutie!

Congratulations! Two birds will have social mates and one hard-luck birdie will have a forever home. Priceless. So glad for you.

You will find that the two birds will start to call to each other because they can hear each other, even if you live in a huge palace. (I have found that they have very keen ears and their calls can carry for quite a distance.)

Oz came from a four-bird house so you must not slack off on keeping him quarantined.

During my Petey's quarantine period, I took him to the vet and he was found to have a bacterial flare-up (fecal) so he was put on antibiotics--the stress of moving to a new home, and all that. Poor fella. Perhaps, this might be something for you to consider, too.

Once again, congratulations.

Ive been reading up on the quarantine, it makes me very nervous! We're going to just put Oz upstairs while Gus is downstairs for the time being. I KNOW they are going to talk to one another, Gus screams at the birds outside, I can't imagine what he's going to do with another one of his kind in the house!!

I want to look into getting a double flight cage. The ones I have found are a little too large, but I do want one that the cages are side by side and not stacked up on top. I found one for roughly $319 and I think that includes shipping. But, it just seems so large for a lovebird. Any suggestions?

lol- no such thing as too large!!

Jack & Chino's cages are each about 3 ft by 3 ft and 1 1/2 ft deep.

Lots of room for toys, flitting about and such.

Maybe wait, though...

If they end up not liking each other, they can still bite toes & beaks through the divider.

I'm sure they'll love each other, but I'd wait and see.

Oh- and Birds Comfort.com has them for around $250 or so

Congrats!

As for the cage being too big... Freyja and Odinn's new cage (next week, woo hoo!) will be even bigger!

There are some good opportunities for cages out there. I found one that I had to have for $200, and then the EXACT same one on an auction site, for $60 and free ship- unused, still in the box, the same exact cage- I grilled the poor seller... so, shop around!

I'm so happy to hear you found something that will work out!

So then should I just wait to see how they interact and then maybe they can stay in the same cage together? I figure what if I get a flight cage and then they love each other and are with each other always then what do I do with the extra cage space...ohhh I guess just get another bird : )

Well... my thoughts are... I'll e-mail you info about the cage I'm getting, and at $60 each, you could put them side-by-side when the QT is done, and if they love each other and want to move in, and all the fun... you're still spending a lot less money than on the double cage.

You could then always "rehome" the other cage or get another bird. Plus, if you got another bird, you woudn't have to get ANOTHER cage for QT...

I don't necessarily think that the double cage is a bad idea... just my brainstorm! However... if the double cage opens up to one cage, that changes things, too. Let me know if you want that info.

Woohoo!! Congrats on your new baby! I love the excitement of getting a new baby, but the QT is hard! Especially in my tiny house :(

Anyway, my thoughts on having 2 cages is that it would be nice if they want their own separate space. Our suns came with 2 huge parrot cages, which is good, but they take up so much space in my already too small of a house. They play in one cage together during the day, but at night they HAVE to be in their own cages. The boy screams bloody murder if he is locked up with the girl and it is HIS bedtime LOL

And, by having 2 cages that they can play and explore, if one ends up being a girl, that just might stop any cage aggression or at least lessen it a bit.
