Remember when I used to complain that Gus went to bed at 7p.m. and I said that was too early - well now he's going to bed at 10pm! What a difference huh? Also, he no longer goes into his happy hut, now he sits atop his playgym on top of his cage and sleeps there until I come in and have to literally pick him up & place him into his cage, otherwise he won't go in:rofl:

He has just begun sleeping on top of his cage within the last week. I am not going to do this for safety reasons, but does anyone let their bird sleep outside of the cage ever rather than inside with the door closed? I don't think this is a good thing to do, safety wise, but I just wonder. Gus does look very comfortable on top of his gym all fluffy and sleepy - he even has his one spot right under a hanging toy that literally dangles on his head!! Tee hee my silly Goomba.

I feel the change in sleep time could very well be because of O's presence in the house? He goes to bed at 10pm, or has at least since he's been here. Gus has done that since O has been in the house, going to bed that late I mean, so maybe he senses it? I don't know how he would, but he also escaped up my stairs and on to the top of O's cage so anything is possible with this little guy!!

I know there's someone on here whose bird likes to sleep on a platform just under the cover, not inside the cage . . .

I've wanted too. but it's too dangerous... when you get up at night time.. what if you bang into something.. what if they jump off their play pens in the dark.. .. too many what iffs.

I was the asme in terms of time to go to bed.. elmo would be asleep at 7 and would wake p at 7 *sigh*.. but now.. we are both sleepy heads.. she goes to bed at 10:30.. and wakes up at 9:30.. sometimes later!! I love it. She is the last person to wake in the house..

I would never allow my birds to sleep outside their cages. If for any reason one should get mislead or spooked from their resting spot, further attempts at navigating in subdued lighting could prove life threatening. And who knows where they could end up afterwards.

Could you imagine waking up only to find your lovie nowhere in sight!........:omg:

Imagine if you woke up with your lovie just staring at you.. even if I go for a nap in the afternoon.. elmo has to go in her cage..

Our tiel is cageless. She chose that all on her own. Hubby's job is to get fresh water and put the budgies and tiel to bed. But, the tiel was all comfy in a wreath and hissed at hubby when he went to get her down to put her in her cage, so hubby left her there and she has been there ever since.

Sometimes we find her underneath the other birds blankets. I guess maybe she gets cold. But, normally, she stays put on her wreath.

Jally - That's pretty much what Gus does on his cage. I have never found him anywhere else once he is in 'his spot', but I don't think I will let him sleep out of the cage, we have a large house with noises and I just don't want to take chances!!

At least last night he let me pick him up with no problems. I put on my gloves (just can't accept the biting yet) and Gus only tried to get me twice and then let me pick him up and put him in the cage. He slept on a perch last night, but I checked on him numerous times (as I'm known to do) and he was fine! As long as he's happy.

Of all the birds we've had, only Oliver the Quaker slept on his cage-top perch and never went anywhere he wasn't supposed to- he was an out-of-cage bird 99% of the time.

One time I dozed off with Freyja and Odinn's cage door open and woke up to one on my head and the other on my pillow pulling my hair out!

Yeah....that would be me!! My little monster sleeps outside his cage, yes. I know it may sound terrible to some people, but he's been doing this now for over a year! :omg: I have this little platform thing on the side of his cage and it has a T-perche on it and a ladder going over the top of it and he sleeps under that ladder on the platform. I tuck him in there every night and he stays put and there is never a danger of him getting spooked in the night because he is covered with a blanket and can't just fly off! plus the platform makes it very hard for him to ever fall. Pip is a pretty good sleeper....once he's to sleep for the night, that's it.....he stays put until morning. Only thing is he likes to come out of there early and go over to Ivy's cage and will climb up under her cover and sleep there with her until we get up and uncover them! He used to do this on the tiel's cage before Ivy came along! I know without a doubt that when he's there with the other birds, sleeping on their cage that he will stay there because he won't leave the other birds. I have worried sometimes that my boyfriend might get up in the morning and just forget that Pip is out and if Pip was ever on the floor or something that he could get stepped on......BUT Pip always chirps fairly loudly when he is going from his cage to the others in the morning to let us know he is there, and rarely goes on the floor. He did used to go onto the floor for about two feet or so and climb the ladder when his flight was more limitted.
Last night I put them to sleep for the night a little earlier, with spring coming and all......and Pip did NOT want to settle in for the night! He came right out from underneath the cover a couple of times after I tucked him in......Sooooo, in the cage he went for the night! Also....we have mice and need to set some traps in here at night, so Pip is going to be sleeping in his cage again tonight! He sleeps in his cage when we are away and in rare instances where we might have to get up really early the next day and go somewhere. Now would be a good time to get him used to sleeping in his cage because he is now starting to notice and use his happy hut, so maybe he might sleep in there now!

I almost let gus sleep outside of his cage tonight but didn't at the last minute and woke the little guy. Gus is a really good sleeper too, he stays put all night no matter what. Even tonight I came up every 45 minutes or so to check on him and in 3 hours he didn't move once!! Thank god too because that little bird is sneaky sometimes!!!

I would just like to inject a word of caution here.

One of my sister's birds escaped during the night once. When she got up in the night to go to the bathroom she stepped on something and kicked it out of her way in the dark. In the morning she discovered that she had stepped on her bird...

Needless to say, this was fatal for Leo (a hen).

OH no chickobee!!!! Thats so sad! Yeah I will never let Gus sleep outside his cage all night, simply for his own safety and the fact that a freak accident can happen at any time, but I do let him sleep on top of his cage as long as I or my boyfriend are still awake, and then when we go to bed, Gus goes back in the cage.
