For the past 3 days Bobble has been sometimes sitting under her food dish, she has always been a cronick shredder and searcher for a place to nest but this is a little different. I caught her trying to tuck pellets this morning, poor thing, as I dont have anything in the cage to encourage nesting. I dont put tissue down under the grates now as she always managed to get it up!

She is a bit floofed up and when i picked up the paper towels this morning she jumped onto the side of the cage staring at it like she was possessed!

I think she has a rounder bum but not sure? Andy my boyfriend thinks she has. Im not sure what to do, obviously I dont want eggs but its breaking my heart that she is tucking pellets :'(

Shall I get her a tissue box to lay the eggs and then replace with fakes? or shall I just leave her? :(

Thanks in advance :)

If you think shes got a rounder bum if you can, take a photo and post it. The experts on here will be able to tell you.

Sorry I can't be much of help, im sure someone will post soon.

Hi- if your little girl has an egg, she'll look swollen on her underside just in front if her vent.

The vent also looks bigger than normal. You can very gently palpate the area if you want, and see if you feel an egg.

Another sign, at least in Jack's case, are extra large watery poops.

You can try a tissue box, but Jack just shredded hers. I've heard it works for some.

If you're positive you have a male/female pair, and you don't want babies, you can boil eggs and return to her when they cool. I believe you need to do it in a fairly short period of time, before an embryo begins to develop.

Just watch her and make sure you see wet poops. If they stop, that's when you'll be concerned about egg binding.

Extra calcium-rich foods are a good idea (kale, broccoli etc) during egg laying.

Good luck! It is pretty cool. My Jack actually let me watch her lay one. I do everything I can think of to get Jack to stop, but she's a machine!

Thank you for the advice flapjack, today she doesnt seem so bad, and not so fat? She is very difficult to get hold of as her hobby is biting so can never get a proper look! They are definately a male and female pair (seen them do it too shhhh :O ) She loves brocolli so no probs there, never really been interested in her cuttle bone though? And her poo's seem normal to be honest.

Maybe she isnt, was just her behaviour was slightly weird what with the tucking of her pellets :( i'll keep a good eye on her though.

Ha Ha! Just because you witness them "doing it" doesn't necessarily mean you have a m/f pair. Two males or two females can also give a very good rendition of a bonded pair. The surest way to tell is if you get fertile eggs or have your birds DNA'd.

Isn't spring grand??? My hens are trying to tuck anything and everything. If I give them millet they don't eat it. They destroy it to get the bits of stem to tuck!

They have been dna'd :) will be putting a few pics up in a tick :) Bobble doesnt eat millet either, she just shreds the stems too! Sometimes she looks like a millet holder!

Sorry that I am probably asking silly questions, still trying to learn! They are both with each other permanently and even during out of cage time they want to be in the cage which is very unlike them!

Hmmm- I can tell you that when Jack is getting close to laying, she is much bigger than your hen just in front of her vent area.

Yes, i got the word "eggnant" from here! I think she must be like this because of the time of year. She has just bitten Sticky quite hard on the leg today so I have spent some time wth him alone and he is feeling a bit sorry for himself, she is really giving him a hard time chasing him all round the cage :( poor little guy!

Will do, she is currently spending most of her time chewing all the woolly strands from the knot on her triangle rope perch and putting them in one corner of the cage under her water bowl, she has made a mess of the perch and think she thinks shes hit the jackpot discovering it! Im not sure whether I should clean them out as dont want to mess up her work if she really is expecting :(
