When does one decide when its OK for two birds to sleep in the same cage?

I ask because Gus and O now fall asleep cuddling together atop the cage (it varies which one every night) and then I have to place them in separate cages. They get along, but I don't want to put O in Gus's cage and have him be uncomfortable or vice versa with Gus in O's cage. I'm leaning more towards one big cage when I get the next cage instead of the flight with the divider, so I feel I should test the waters soon, but how do I know when or how to do so??

I don't see them ever going into the cage together since they both always fall asleep on the top of one instead of inside. & once I put O in his cage he goes back to bed, but Gus makes every attempt to get back out of his cage to where O is. He got out once but went right back on top of the cage, on top of O, and I don't want him out of his cage all night.

If they get along well, you can try putting them in one cage or the other while you are still awake and see what happens. If neither of them is cage territorial, it should work out, especially if they are both males. If they seem comfortable, I would leave them together.

When introducing a male/female pair, you either put the female in the male's cage or get another, completely different (neutral) cage and put the male in first. It can only take 5 seconds for a female to take possession of living quarters but it doesn't sound like you have that problem. :) Gus is young and it doesn't sound like O has a mean bone in his cute feathered body so that will enter into the equation, as well.

Thanks Linda - Do I run the risk of them becoming heavily bonded if they are in the same cage together? I know they will probably bond eventually - but I don't want them to start to not like my presence or to not remember me as their mommy = (

If they bond to each other, you won't be left out of the equation if you give them both attention. What will happen is that you will have 2 birds loving you instead of one!

I have 2 hens, Flutter and Tobi, who just love each other. When they are out of the cage, they both make a beeline straight for my head!:rofl::rofl:

Update: Gus and Oslo have decided that O's cage is the "cool cage" & they have been sleeping in there together, side by side on top of the happy hut, for about the past 3 nights. It is, of course, adorable but again, I'm feeling more and more left out!! I wish they liked gus's cage - it's the nicer one!!

All is well in Birdland ; )
