I found a parrotlet online that are in need of re-homing. He was hatched in September. The lady who has him now spoils him rotten, but says she is not a bird person. She is re-homing him because of that reason. He also talks, says three phrases!!! She said he does need a little bit of work with someone who knows birds (maybe me!). So my question is, should I take a chance on this little guy? or wait for my baby in June? Im stuck! He comes with EVERYTHING - cage, food, toys, perches, etc. and is $300. The cage is an HQ flight cage!!:omg:

Problem is, if he bonded with his owner since she has had him, will this provide a lot of strife for him to bond with me?? Will it be harder for me? Im assuming it will, since they seem like a one person bonded bird.

We all know how I am when it comes to birds that need to be re-homed.....I'm a sucker for them!!!! Anyway - I need some advice on this situation. I either wait, or I take this little one home and provide him with a forever home.

Help! Any thoughts?? My heart says "yes!" my head says "think about it!"

What kind of parrotlet are we talking about? $300.00 "rehoming fee" sounds like this person wants to recoup every penny she's spent on the bird! That's not rehoming, it's selling! This sounds like a pass to me. Too expensive!

It is a pacific green parrotlet. The parrotlet I am supposed to get in June was going to run me $250, and that was from a breeder. That is how much they run around here $175-$250. Here is a photo of the parrotlet I am looking at:

She's right.....it is selling, even with the nice big flight cage....they run about 100 or a little more......but.....if you were planning on buying anyway, then I guess it doesn't matter too much. The bird is still young. I don't think the fact that the bird is bonded to her is going to matter too much either. He'll have the adjustment to make to a new home no matter what, and without her there, he'll just bond to whoever's available that he likes. My Ivy was very bonded to her owner, and now she's very bonded to me! It was a hard adjustment for her, but she took to me pretty quickly.

Yea birds run very expensive where I am and I'm not too sure why. It's not like the are not in abundance, but I have found it very hard to find breeders and its important to me to get birds from breeders. Maybe that's being picky, but I like to make sure I am getting a good bird. However, I guess Gus was a re-home and so was Os so maybe thats not so true - and the parrotlet too!! LOL - OK so before I found this parrotlet I WAS in contact with a breeder!!

I do figure that $300 is a deal considering there is an HQ cage, TONS of toys and perches and 2 play stands. This would all come to a large amount of money if purchased separately and plus, I can also use the play stands for the lovebirds, once cleaned of course.

i bought my plet for 175$ Canadian 6 years ago - with cage and toys - much more. if the bird is healthy, friendly, then it may not be a bad deal. make sure you check it out really well, visit the home before committing. it sure looks like a beautiful plet! good luck! :)

Hi, I agree with checking the little one out first. Do you know the last time it had a vet check or age? It sounds like a good deal. I think you should follow your gut once you check it all out. It sure is a cutie pie! Good luck and let us know what you decide to do! ;)

I'm thinking she is asking such a high price to ensure a good home, maybe? I say, if you can afford it, get her. :)

I agree, sounds like she wants to sell and not re-home, I'd pass..but the bird is adorable! Get the baby :) You'll probably bond faster with him/her.

Hi everyone - thanks for the great responses. I have decided to adopt the Parrotlet. I pick him up next Friday!! I talked her down in price but she did tell me she just wants him to go to a home where someone knows about birds and can fully understand him and love him. & that's me!! I am very excited and at the same time very nervous but I've been in contact with this lady all day and I feel good about her and the little one!!!

I had a talk with Gus and Oslo and told them they would have a new sibling soon. They looked at me like "oh great mom, another one?!" but I gave them some millet so I think they'll be ok : )

One week!!!!

Wow! that is alot of stuff!! I guess that IS a good deal!! I myself would have went for the bird being re-homed instead of a baby. Pip was re-homed, and so was Ivy and both I am very happy with. Alot of people go looking to breeders for babies.....when a bird gets re-homed, sometimes people will pass it over for a baby.....not me! I like the idea of giving a bird in need of a home a good one. It makes you feel good to be able to give the bird a good home, plus re-homed birds are just as good as babies!
Congrats!!! :clap

Over the years I've found I prefer rehomed birds to baby birds. While babies are cute and sweet, it's harder to tell what their adult personality will be like. With a rehomed bird, they have often gone through their baby stages and you have a better idea of their personality.

I do agree the price for the parrotlet is a bit steep, but you are making sense in breaking down the costs of all the stuff to see the deal you are getting. Plus, it will be more comfy for the little guy to be rehomed with his stuff.

Congrats! It does sound like you are getting a lot of stuff with your new parrotlet. I can't wait to see more pics!

I, too , am very happy with my re-homed lovie, Ducky. He is such a sweetie! Good luck!

Congrats and also a side note... $300 that is a deal over here for JUST the cage. I have 2 HQ flight cages one I paid $430 for and the other I paid $299 and it was on special as it was display stock and a funny colour green!

Another side note what is Goldenfeast Australian Blend I have never heard of this

I actually never got the parrotlet - with the loss of my babies so suddenly I just couldn't bring a new bird into my home right now. I'll have the necropsy results soon but until then I can't take any risks. Thank you for your words!!

BTW I don't know what the goldenfeast australian blend is, I've never heard of it either.

I understand about not being able to get another one so soon. Hopefully you will find the perfect little fella or girl to make your feathered family complete
