I pick up zoe tonight at 8. I'm really excited. I hope her cage fits into my bf's car. I think I will rename her. I have some ideas but we'll see when I get her.

Whenever I take a new bird that already has a name, I leave the name as it is because just the change in home is enough trauma without changing anything else that's familiar. I probably would never have named a Quaker Parrot Bird Bird but that's what she calls herself so Bird Bird it is! :)

yea I dont know if I would change the name. When I got my chihuahua Maggie her name was already Maggie. I said I would change it but I just couldn't do it, it suited her! You'll see if you can change it or not, Zoe might just be a great name for her!! Yea keep us posted how tonight goes - exciting!

Good luck with Zoe.
Ironically, my bird will answer to Cherry or Larry. If you do change it, I would keep in the same "Oh-ee" family.
Like Chloe, Bo, Moe....names like that.

hehe, Chloe and Sophie are names in my list to pick from. my birds don't answer to their names at all...I wonder if they even know it. My boyfriend wants to rename her Petrie after the flying dinosaur in The Land Before Time.

Birds definately know their names. I've seen it personally! I agree with the others about not changing the name at least initially. I have plenty of birds whose names I don't like but they came with them. The great thing is names kind of transpose over time so you will naturally start calling Zoe something else but she will be comfy by then.
Good Luck with Zoe! She is a lucky girl.

Freyja and Odinn know their names, and so does Benny,
I had wanted to change Benny's name- my other two birds are named after Norse Gods and Benny just seemed like, well... "What are your birds named?" "Freyja, Odinn, and Benny." "How do you spell that last one?" "B-E-N-N-Y, Benny. Benny Bird." "Ohhh, Benny, its just... Benny." I've had this conversation. So, Benny's official name is Bennu, which is an Ancient Egyptian Bird God with characteristics similar to that of a Phoenix. Still, I call him Benny, Bennu, Ben, Ben-Ben, even Beanie and he is happy. We call Freyja "Frey" or "Frey-Frey" and Odinn, "Odie" so it seemed acceptable for Benny to have an old time God name and a nick name or two.
Odinn, in particular, LOVES hearing his name said and sung. He gets very excited when I sing songs with his name in it!
Congrats on the big day, I know it will work out well for everyone involved!

i'm sure birds know their names, but i don't know if mine know their names. if they do, i miss the body language on that. they sure don't respond to it. anyway. not really here to talk about whether joey understands "joey" or if pan knows "pan".
zoe is doing good. we went over to cindy's and then the cage didn't fit inside my boyfriend's car so cindy followed us home w/ the cage in hers. Joey sure liked Cindy, giving her kisses and all. What a little sneak ;) I was afraid he was gonna work his way up her tee shirt sleeve and go into her shirt like he always does w/ me.
I had Zoe out w/ me for a bit. She's very sweet and let me give her a head rub. She's very calm and played a bit on her tinkertoy that Cindy had made her. I'm glad she has familiar toys to play with. She's such a good girl. I gave her some finger traps, pony beads, bagels, and wicker balls in a small container for her to play with. She's very adorable.
SHE'S SO TINY!!!! Joey and them look like giants next to her. I have never seen a parrotlet before.
I really hope it all works out.

I never change the names either...for that reason, AND the fact I always have a hard time coming up with a good, fitting name.....soooo, when the bird already has a name, it saves me the trouble of having to come up with one. We only named Woody and it took six weeks for us to come up with a name for him! I also feel that my birds all know their names. I definitely think once a bird (or dog or cat) has a name for a certain length of time, that chances are very good that he knows it and it should always stay the same.

I say to either change it or add something to her name like Sweet Zoe or Zoe Zoe or Zoe Zo.
We've had rehomes before that we changed their names and they did just fine. One was a lovebird named Evil, we quickly changed it to Maile and I think she appreciated the name change. And one of our sun conures came with the name Davey. She's a girl so we changed it to Daisy.
