So I am going to moving into a new house soon and I am able to get a new pet. I was thinking on what kind of animal to get, and I can't decide! I would love to have a cat...but cat's and birds don't mix very well. I was also thinking about getting a bunny, but then I realized they scratch...alot. I thought a headgehog would be fun, because my 2nd grade teacher had one and I always played with it. A farret sounds fun, but they are illegal in California...but then I realized the pet store has an entire Isle of nothing but farret supplies and things like that.
Anyone have any ideas ? What kind of animal would you prefer? :) I'm looking to rescue, not purchase.

I would get another bird if I had the choice!! I have to be careful if we ever get another pet besides a bird. We have 2 dogs, a parrotlet and now a conure - so we'd have to make sure everybody mixes well. You don't want to get another bird?? I wouldn't recommend a ferret considering they could be big time predators. Yeesh, I dunno!!

i LOVE weasels and would love a ferret but my husband won't let me have one because they "smell bad".

Definitely don't get a ferret -- I realize that they sell ferret supplies in CA but why run the risk of having your pet confiscated? The same with hedgehogs, which are also illegal in CA.
Rabbits can be really great companions. There are LOTS of rabbit rescues in the US; check out www.rabbit.org for more information. While rabbits are prey animals and the very things that we humans want to do with them (hold them like babies, cuddle and snuggle with them, pet them endlessly) kind of go against their nature... but with that said, I've had quite few cuddle-buns over the years. A rescue might be a great place to start as you can meet rabbits in foster situations and find one that bonds with you.
Are hamsters legal as pets in CA? They come up for rescue a lot, too. Same with mice, rats and guinea pigs, all of which can make for great pets.

Too bad you can't have hedgehogs, they make neat pets. I was looking at some really cute pygmy hedgehogs recently, and wish I could have one. Ferrets are cool, but if you don't have a large airy area for them... they smell, and contrary to uninformed belief, bathing them does not help- when they are bathed they release more of their oils and it causes them to smell even worse. I grew up in a critter house and we usually had a ferret or two, and the animal room always smelled awful no matter how clean we kept them and their area. Smell aside, they're great, but if they're illegal its best not to. It may be a silly restriction, but it'll be worse for the animal and for you, if they end up confiscated and euthanized.
Maybe a tortoise? Potbellied pig? Chinchilla? I don't know what's legal in your area.

I have a friend who works as a professional pet care-taker. She used to be a vet tech. She has a job right now giving a hermit crab insulin shots! I really want to know how one deduces that a hermit crab is diabetic!

Yes. Hampsters are legal pets in California. I had a long hair teddy bear hampster and that is a breed I highly recommend. So sweet and he never bit me at all in his little life! He passed away when he was 3 1/2 for reasons unknown. Maybe he was old or had an illness? No clue. You have to trim the teddy bear hampsters a little bit because their fur can get matted.

3 years is a natural lifespan for the teddy hamsters, I'm sure you did right by him!
