Okay, I had to break down and use the self-cleaning thing on my oven yesterday. Long story short, I made a pumpkin pie and told my husband to take it out while I went to wrap gifts. He took it out alright, and dropped in inside the oven as his hot-mitt failed and got his hand all hot in the process. I think it was more like a "drop a hot coal" type of reflex. So the pie then baked itself onto my oven bottom and element. I ran a three hour cycle and the majority of the oven came clean. I then cleaned the inside with baking soda, water and a sponge and ran the over for one hour at 350 degrees to not only dry it out, but to make sure the funky smell is gone.

Now, the bird was safely transported to his Grammy's house for an overnight birdie sleepover. And yes, before the oven even went on he was out of the house and in the car ready to go!! I cooked dinner on the stove yesterday, baked cookies today, and made lunch in the over and I don't smell anything anymore that gives off that funky burny smell. When is it okay to go get my baby back? I was going to pick him up tomorrow afternoon (making it be 48 hours since the cleaning.) I've also aired out the house and then turned the air back on with the windows open to get any remaining smell out.

I would say you should be okay to take your little one back home by now. You definitely were careful with what you did. The worse is actually during the process when all the particles are being heated during the cleaning. If you cooked today and you didn't smell any odors, I would say time to pick up the birds :)

Now, the real question, were you able to to gift wrap with no birdies around? It's a pain and a half here to gift wrap with a little hen around :)

NickyBeth,
I agree with Elle about it being OK to bring your lovie home tomorrow. The only other thing I might do before you go get him is open a few doors/windows just to really air everything out. You may have already done this. You and I both live in FL and temperatures are fine for us to do this.

In your situation, I probably would have done the same thing, although I've got a lot more birds to move around! :lol

Thanks guys, wanted to know what you thought about the subject. I'm going to air the house out tomorrow too as well -- and I already changed the air filter today JUST to be on the safe side. It needed to be changed, anyway!

And about the gift wrapping...I do that at the MIL's house where we hide all the gifts!! No birdies and no kiddies to ruin the fun. ;)
