That is what I have been saying for over and hour to Martha. I want to get to talk. The first day I got her she whispered something into my ear. I said " What Martha?" and she just looked at me. Then a couple of days ago she started to move her beak trying to talk! So I am going top get her to talk.
Taylor & Martha....... Hello!

Taylor,

Lovies don't talk alot, some never do, but repetition is the key, one word at a time. My lovie Bela says a couple of things, "Luv U" and "Peek" for Peek-a-boo. He does not talk as plain as the larger parrots, but his Mama knows what he's saying :)

Well, I will keep trying. I will be very proud if she just learns to say Hello. I am thinking of a tape recorder.

LOL,

I got one of those recorders that are supposed to teach your birds to talk. It scared Bela death, and he hated it, but then again, he freaks out a bit over anything new, this new thing just talked :lol

LOL. I saw those. I may freak Martha out too. You should have seen her when she discovered the sealing fan! The almost did a back flip off the top of her cage. LOL

My birds make noises I've learned to interpret. Peter says Peek. Peepo :) makes big smacky kissy noises! It gets her off the hook every time she gets nippy and I call her on it - kiss kiss!

Way ta go Peter! That's the way to do it! She would probably say, " Just act real cute and they won't even know!"

Heheh, yeah, repetition is the key. My budgie can say quite a few words, but it isn't clear like a parrot. More of a garbling that you really have to listen to, although I know what he says now (as in, it's clear to me) and his voice is beautiful. :) I'm trying to get my lovies and other budgie to talk, and since they are young, it will be a bit easier, than if they were older.

I repeat a lot of words in front of Blu. She says hello and pretty bird as well as pretty Blu. When she wants something she looks at you sideways and throws a couple of pretty Blu. When she's exited she flaps her wings and screams pretty bird. She whistles a lot. She has picked up on a lot of tunes and has fun rearanging them her way.
When you repeat hello to her or other words you would like her to learn, put a lot of energy and emphasis in it. You can also put the word in songs. ( my husand is always singing the slinky song... (everybody loves a slinky  ) or so he says. I'm french, I've never heard that song before I met him. We replace the words with pretty pretty birdy. It gets their attention very quickly. When they say words, they imitate tones. As Lori said, it's never that clear. But you'll know exactly what Martha is saying if you listen for it. Most important, have fun with it.

Maybe I'm the only one on the forum who's lovebird(s) doesn't talk! :D Nope, not a single word out of Oliver! Lots of wonderful lovie sounds and plenty of "peeps" but that is just another of his calls and whistles. Don't know if the new boys will talk but I'm not holding my breath. It would be  though! I have heard that hens are more likely to talk. I will say that Oliver answers me when I call or talk to him. He really acts like he understands a lot of what I'm saying. :D

Janie, none of my crew speaks...well, I mean, none of the lovebirds do however when they "speak" in their own language, I know what they are saying. I've spent enough time, as I'm sure many people have, listening to those calls and know just what their lovie is saying. I'll bet Oliver has been telling you off for the past few days about those two new blue birds you brought into HIS house! :D

I have a question. How long do you have to repeat things? a week? a month?

Until they repeat you.

It's hard to say, some larger parrots pick thing up right away, others it take lots of repetion. Even so, you may never hear your lovie speak. Lovebirds do what they want...if they don't want to speak English, they won't. ;)

MJ, I agree 100%!!!! Oliver speaks "Lovebird" and I speak "English" but we understand each other so well!!! Yep, he was sitting on his perch while I was in the shower a few days ago and he gave me an ear full about those two in the other room! :D

Taylor, you might repeat a word for a year and Martha still won't say it. I could happen but it might not so you need to learn her language. You can communicate, even if you aren't speaking the same language! :)

Sam and The Bird didn't talk. Any of the cocktiels I've had didn't talk. None of my budgies ever talked except the one I left at my parent's place when I moved out. That one started talking a month after I left. Blu is the first one who is crossing the language barrier.
don't feel bad. ;)
