I posted a couple of weeks ago our new cage for our lovebird.
We made a bumpout in the back for the food and water as the water
and food cup was a problem in our old cage. Firstly, our bird pooped
in the water and secondly she knocked over the food and water cup.

On the new cage the bowls are wedged into the bumpout in the back,
so this can't happen anymore.

However, I was thinking this morning, what would have worked
as a watering cup is a salt pig.
I have one that I purchased in home goods for 5.00...
what do you all think of this idea. The bird can't poop in the food
or water and it wouldn't be easy to tip...

this is what a salt pig looks like.

These might get tipped over unless you can figure out a way to secure them that wouldn't cause a danger to your birds. Lovebirds can get their toes or beaks caught in things so it is important to use items which are designed for, and, are safe for birds.

I use the covered water dishes that are on the Dr Foster & Smith website. They have a clear plastic cover which keeps the birds from pooping in their water dish.

I secure the water dish up near the top of the cage and put the food dishes near the bottom to minimize the birds making lovebird soup. (dropping food into their water)

For food dishes I use a metal ring and clamp that holds a stainless steel dish. I put these up far enough from the floor of the cage so they can't lift it out and dump it.

This is the only photo I have here that shows them. They are all up high because the baby birds just came out of the nestbox. I had all of the food and water up high close to the nestbox so it would be easier for the parent birds when they were feeding their babies. At least you can see pictures of both to see what works for us.

I have extras of the food and water dishes so I can run one set through the dishwasher each morning and put the clean ones in the cage.

You can get a similar one designed for birds

I use a bottle similar to this one:

I like not having to reach into the cage to refill the water and there's no mess in it, no poops or anything.
