How much are ussually your vet bills? Check up,testing,clipping...Just want to have an idea...I know dog's,cat's bills got high, don't know about birdies...I use to have perrot for 18 yrs,and he had only one visit to the vet...and that was back in Europe...so I am not into pricing here and now.

Hi, I'll be interested in everyone's replies here as well. I just took both Bea and Palie for their annual check ups and about fell over! Ouch! Here's my vet's breakdown of charges for their annual exams:

Avian annual exam $54
Avian panel $92
Culture & sensitivity $54
Gram stain $36
Wing trim $20
Nail trim $20

Fortunately I'm able to give Bea her nail trims but Palie is a different story!

Exam, testing (gram stains, bloodwork, disease testing) run about $300 +/- for me (a titch more expensive to meet with the board-certified avian specialist). They include grooming (nails and flight feathers) with that; any work on the beak costs extra.

I just had an ER visit with Pickle which was about $250.

Office visit here is $58.00 for a "basic" visit. Wing clip, $20 (OUTRAGEOUS) and toenail clip, $20. I learned to do my own wing clipping.

I did have a sick bird (first time ever)) a couple months ago and the vet charged me the basic office visit and around $20. more for the medication. I think we got lucky with that visit as I expected it to be much higher.

As Eliza posted, blood work, grams, etc. are extras beyond the office visit. I have found my bird vets to be a bit more expensive than my dog vet.

Eliza, you're closest to me,I guess our prices here on east coast are little higher...

I am on the east coast and it's not that high here! I think the office visit is about 40, can't remember how much the gram stain was, I think less maybe around 30, nail and wings are togther for 15. When I take Pip to the vet in the past for his bacterial infections, the test they do under the microscope costs 40 to test his bacteria level....by the time I paid for the office visit, that test, wing and nail trim, meds, it was about 120 I think.

Wow, the prices at Angell are OUTRAGEOUS compared to the prices quoted by you all. They may be world class and a famous hospital for parrots, and I absolutely love my vet, but we pay A LOT more than the prices any of you quoted, A LOT more... for base prices and labs. I've never paid to have wings or nails done. We may have to have Sayuri's beak done at some point if she becomes unable to maintain it in the future.

but I've seen people in the US pay more.

Its very convenient to have a quality avian ER, and trusted vet within 15 minutes, traffic notwithstanding... but for regular non emergent visits we may consider traveling from now on. We are not well off and the really need the vet fund "surplus" for emergencies!

I take my Dog and the birds to Angell as well, and YES, the prices are high, but I have had quite a few pet emergencies and I don't know of many Hospitals that have the facilities for all animals, as well as exotics, that Angell does...my previous vet had to send me to Angell or Tufts Animal if I needed any testing done, as they didn't have the means to do them in-house. I figure I might as well pay a bit more and have everything there in the event of ever needing it. There is no doubt in my mind that they saved Wrigley's life a year and a half back. It did cost around 600-800 for all of the emergent care and I don't have much money either, but that's what I signed up for when I got my pets- they're my babies and I'll do what I can for them.

I think as far a regular office visits go, we pay about 40-60 daollars more for a visit than what people are listing here, but I literally live 4 blocks from Angell and am willing to pay the extra once or twice a year for annual exams.

I think it's really hard to give just an estimated amount. What's posted is helpful but vet bills can get into the hundreds and even thousands if a bird gets sick. You also have to consider the costs for birds who have ongoing medical issues. We have a couple of birds that have and continue to cost us a ton of money. So it's always good to have a plan on how to pay or finance vet bills.

Here it is $250.00 just to walk in the door at the Emergency Clinic. Unfortunately, my Avian vet for over 3 years went there and now the closest avian vet is an hour away. So my prices may go up...
