Now call me crazy, but both Jarrod and I have heard Tarquin say 'Hello' and 'Step-up'... We've heard him say it separately and when we've both been with him, and it's not wishful thinking! It sounds gravelly, but he is most definitely saying those words quite clearly and with the same tone inflection as when we say it.

How amazing is that?! He's only been home a month! He is no more than 13wks old! Clever birdie!

I'm just so chuffed I HAD to tell everyone. I thought he was way too young to be mimicking so well. What have you guys experienced?

Sounds like Tarquin is going to be quite a handful in your family! Good deal on the talking. Lovebirds have speech ability but are not known for it. As you said, their speech sounds kind of gravely and it can be hard to understand. If my memory serves me correctly, there are a number of community members who have lovebirds that talk. :)

I knew some lovies have a limited vocab but it's rare, so we didn't really factor that in when deciding what kind of small bird to get - I'll consider it a bonus!

I was utterly stunned when I first heard it yesterday morning, so much so I assumed I'd imagined it and didn't mention it to Jarrod, but then he called to say he thought he'd heard Tark talk, and then last night we were home together and both heard. And again this morning! Absolutely amazing!

I could not be more chuffed, we have a genius birdie. I definitely think you have a point Linda, he sure is going to be a handful... If I can just get him onside with me again I think we'll have years of fun with him.

I'm sure it's a little bit sad to be so excited by it all, but that's what pets do to me!

I would be extremely excited as well! I would have loved for Estrella to talk but the most I could get out of him was "Chirp Chirp" and some occasional "Peeps" lol. But I always knew he understood me and we could talk without really talking. Congrats!!!

........But I always knew he understood me and we could talk without really talking.......

Although i've yet to ever hear my lovebirds vocalize in human form, we still manage to communicate quite well. ... The body lanquage, the pitch and level of their peeps or chirps, and their eyes, are all good indicators of how their feeling, and what their objectives are at any given moment. ... Without a doubt, I am most certain they understand me as well. ...This is very special!........:)

Be careful what you say around chatty lovies - we learned that the hard way with Cipher! He could say, "Hello", "Nate", "Don't bite!", and "Pretty Bird", which are all really cute and adorable. THEN, he learned how to swear in Klingon (bad habit of mine to swear in various sci-fi languages), and started saying, "P'tahk"

Lol, what is your secret to getting him to talk?

Ditto mumbles and grumbles alot but I've never been able to recognize anything. He normally only does it when he's hiding his head in one of his toys and I'm not close to the cage so he could be reciting Shakespear for all I know.

No secret! I guess he's just got used to us saying 'Hello baby bird' everytime we come in and then obviously step up whever we handle him. So cute! He seems to be chatting to himself when he does it, if he's exploring somewhere/something new so it must be when he's excited. It's like he's almost thinking aloud to himself, it's very funny.

Too funny Taxman! Lol! Bea mimicks her name "Bea Bea", "nighty night", "sweet dreams", and she mimicks the sound I make when she bites me "Aowwww"! Stinker! Pallie, our ysgcc mimicks "what'cha doin'" and a couple of other things I still haven't made out... They're amazing creatures!

I know, little tinker he is!

In other news, he's started being a little more tolerant of me again. I'm treating him lots and trying not to put myself in a position to be bitten. Not always easy though! Sometimes he bites in a 'tasting' way but he's just a bit too hard. Then of course there are the times he flings himself across the room with his beak open and the devil in his eyes...

We'll get there!

Haha.

My lovebird who passed away a while ago, Loki, said "Step up!"

Frey says "Freyja" "Treats!" "Granny" "Sweet" "Sweetheart"

Odinn says "Treats" "Sweetheart"

sometimes Frey will say "Sweet" and Odinn will say "Heart" its very cute. All five of my birds say "Sweetheart" its the most common word said in this house, I believe. Its one of my baby Parrotlet Sayuri's only 2 words. My lovebirds speak very seldom. Usually they only speak when I'm giving out treats (guess what they say?) and when Benny is yelling "I love you! My sweetheart! (kisskiss)" to Sayuri and Sayuri is yelling "Sweetheart! Beep beep!" to Benny. (we think "Beep Beep" means Benny)

Benny (parrotlet) and Kokoro (quaker) both have very large vocabularies.
