Before I clip flight feathers, I like my youngsters to be expert at distance flying and landing. Clip those feathers too young, and it will be much harder for him to attain the best flight skills when he is older. Flying is great fun at his age and it can be frustrating but he needs just a little bit more time. Most of my first clips take place around age 8-9 weeks, earlier if I have a really, really good flier.

Sounds like a game plan to me! Attention is what's going to keep him tame, plus it's fun to play with them! :)

I have begun doing a "baby clip" when our babies get going too fast. It's simply a more modified clip with just the tips of the flight feathers clipped to cut down on speed. Believe me--they can still fly! They just don't go so fast that they risk serious injury. Later when I sell them I do the regular clip for the new owners.
We had some AMAZING flying on Sunday. The whole flock was out and most of the birds were sitting on one of the playgyms in front of the big windows. It was cloudy outside and there must not have been the usual reflection from the windows outside.
A hawk flew down and tried to grab a bird but hit the glass instead. Luckily he wasn't going super fast because he had slowed down to make the snatch.
Our birds really took off and flew everywhere! Some were upstairs, some in our bedroom, some in the kitchen, some even in the living room. They can sure go fast and far in a hurry when they want to!!!! I had some difficulty locating all of them until they began doing contact calls.
I will NEVER take a bird outside that isn't tightly secured in a carrier!!!!
