View Full Version : Nesty and Sleepy?
Frodo's behaved this way before, and been fine, but I've noticed (especially today) that she seems to be sleeping a lot more than usual. She's been very nesty lately, shredding things, even more cage aggressive, spending most of her in-cage time poofed up chirping or sleeping in her 'nest' (corner), but she does take breaks to eat, drink and play with her bells. Stools have been normal. She's also been flying around and riding on my shoulder, chewing my ponytail. Should I be concerned about the excessive fluffing/sleeping? I don't document her behaviour each time she's like this (maybe I should) but it seems like maybe she's a bit sleepier than she was last time she was in the nesting mood. Does anyone else have a hen who gets like this? Could it be because of her age (going on 11 now)?

Age could be a factor but if the behavior change is really noticeable, I would have her checked by my avian vet. It may be nothing but I wouldn't want to say that and be wrong.
Thanks Linda. She seems to be alright today, much more active...and I heard her several times during the night, playing with her toys and chirping! I wonder if she's been staying up later than usual and not sleeping enough for some reason. She did that right after we moved last year and her schedule was all turned around...nothing different has happened recently that I can think of, but sometimes I really don't get her reasoning. Silly lovie.

If she's not getting straight 10-12 hrs of sleep, that could account for the sleepiness, too. It's so hard to say sometimes. I tend to look at behavior, weight and droppings as an over all picture. However, if there's any doubt in my mind, it's off to see my avian vet!
