Its perfectly normal for your bird to try eating your food. ... Not only can this help solidify your flock relationship, but helps encourage birds to try a wider variety of foods. ... The only problem, (and its obvious you know this already), is birds can't always have the same foods us humans enjoy. .. Besides this, sharing foods that have been in contact with your mouth can make your birdy sick. (even though I know plenty good fidparents that do this anyway). ... Substituting foods that are healthy for your birds in place of what your eating can be a bit tricky. ..After all, they want exactly what YOUR eating, and usually know darned well when your trying to feed them something else. ... Even if you must cage your bird in order to enjoy your own meal, do your best to somehow include them in your meal plan. ... Often ahead of time, I prepare my birds a special plate thats the same type as mine (the plate itself that is, and not always the food), then act as though I prepared it for myself. .. Does this work? ... Depending on how favorable the foods are their allowed to have...sometimes yes. ...most the time, no. ... Although I will say, eating healthier yourself certainly does help. .................:)

Its actually improved my diet making healthy, tasty meals that both myself and my fids can enjoy. I will actually make a section of my plate that's ok for the birds to eat from or "Steal" from to avoid the issue of "backwash"

My rule of thumb is to not buy those foods that are toxic to lovies and other parrots so that way if its not in the house there's no chance of your bird getting sick. I also have a section on my plate that birdies can steal from with no chance of them getting any of my saliva.

With lovebirds, this is very normal! since if they see something they want or like, they can be very determined. Your lovie sees you eating something, so he thinks it must be yummy if you're eating it, plus with birds, the flock eats together, so if he sees you eating, he'll want to join in! What I would do is I would fix a smaller plate of food for him and put it beside your plate and put some foods that he can eat on it, like veggies, beans, rice, pasta.....just make sure what you give has no salt or sugar and didn't come from a can.
As you can see here......lovies won't hesitate to steal your food if they become interested in it!

My own diet has improved so if it's on my plate, my birds can eat it, too. I've been known to create plates for just them, as they feel that what's on my own plate is all theirs, so I wouldn't get anything to eat myself if I didn't give them their own. However, Harley is very stubborn. He has to share what's on MY plate.... Little stinker!
It's amazing how we change our lives so that our fids are safe and those changes make our own lives better. :)

The list of what they CAN have is LONG!
If you read the list of foods they shouldn't have you will have a better idea of what to avoid.
I don't let our birds have sugar, salt, dairy products (except for eggs), tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, or any prepared foods that have any preservatives, MSG, etc. For instance, they can have popcorn if it is plain, but not the popcorn that comes in the bags that already have flavorings.
If you stick to whole foods and stay away from processed foods you will be on the right track to safe eating for your birds.
Rice, beans, peas, corn, carrots, broccoli, squash, quinoa, pasta without sauce, chicken, eggs, fruits........ Bread is generally not a good idea but tiny bits once in a while won't hurt your birds.
You can put sprouts on your own plate and let your bird steal them. The same is true for birdie bread and lots of veggies. You might even find that you enjoy sprouted seeds on your salads! :)
