we have a two day old baby love bird we are hand feeding because the mother rejected it, and its lower beak seems to be split in half. This worries us, and we need to know if this is normal or not.

Hi,
Can you please post some pics of the babies beak. This will help give us some idea of what you are seeing.
Is the baby eating well? Is the crop filling properly? This is first concern of course. If not, then it is imperative that you contact an avian vet ASAP, as little ones can starve or dehydrate quickly.

Hi,
To be quiet honest, I've never heard of a split beak, but then again, I've not had babies. I have heard of a crossed beak, but that is usually the top manible crossed over the lower at an odd angle. Can you get a pic for us???

Pictures of the beak would be very helpfu;. I've handfed a lot of day 1 babies but I'm having a hard time visualizing what you are trying to describe.
What are you feeding the baby and how often. How warm is the food and how much liquid to how much formula? What temperature is the formula and how are you keeping him warm?
Sorry for all the questions but I'm not sure what to tell you without more information.

Hey,
Here is a link to help you post your pics, or you can just put the pic in your post for this one. We don't usually post pics in our post, but under these circumstances it is always okay to do so.

we are feeding the bird a mixture of pedialyte and protines. It is usually about 98 degrees...
Its bottom beak is split in half down the middle and his toungue sticks out. My mom says he may have been premature. I worry cause i dont want him to die, but if he is deformed he may never be able to feed himself. there is a hole. i got a picture but i cant post it here. I dont know much about love birds, but he eats well he is healthy but his beak may be horibly deformed, and this worries me alot

Send the photo to me as an e-mail attachment. I can post it here for others to see.
Baby lovebirds need their food to be between 106F - 108F. 98 degrees is far too cold. How often are you feeding and how are you keeping it warm?

Hi! Well, you can check out the photo forum here and look at lots of photos (and explanations of colors/mutations there) and I do have a book that I like, Vera Appleyard's "The Lovebird Handbook" which shows many colors, etc. You can also do web searches. There are several good sites that show lovebird colors/mutations and other parrots, too. I think I have a few of those bookmarked and will have to take a look for those links. What kind of birds do you have in that "bunch?"
Also, go to Lovebird Breeding (again, in this forum) and check out the genetics section. Hope that helps. :)
