The darkside almost claimed me. I went to the birdy store to get more food for the Dittobird and there he was. right there in the counter in a nice little play area...... A little green cheeked conure, still just a baby. Just lookin at me and following me around when I moved from one side of his playpen to the other.
I could hear him saying, "pssst. Take me home. I like lovebirds too!".
If I wasn't broke right now...........

Remember, Dave. Want and need are 2 different things... :lol Keep repeating: I do not need another parrot; I do not need another parrot; I do not need another parrot! I may want another parrot but I do not need another parrot! Parrots are addictive!!

Dave, I am ashamed of you! You DO need another parrot and it's just a matter of time so GET ONE (or two, :D) and be done with it! :p I swear to you that I gave a lot of thought to adding another one and I am so glad that I did (add two, :)) I do not regret it for a minute. Since you have a very close relationship with Ditto, like I have with Oliver, I do think you should get two so they will have each other and Ditto will always be your number 1 boy. I am going to a bird fair tomorrow and believe me, I will not be at all tempted to get more because I have exactly what I want right now. One big happy family! :D

How ironic this post was here. There is a small pet store right down the rode I visit sometimes if I'm early for meetings I have near there. About two months ago they somehow got their hands on three large young, not baby, parrots and one of them is an African Grey named Mihjo. I have never wanted an African Grey and for awhile my husband was bugging me to get one, but Mihjo is different. He's not sweet and loving like this bare eyed Cockatoo they have. He's very introspective and he looks like he's always deep in thought, contemplating the world. Yesterday a friend and I went to visit and there were kids there who obviously come in all the time and told me to be careful Mihjo is mean and bites, but honestly he is not mean and YES I'm sure he gets irritated with young squealy kids poking at him through the cage. He's way toooo sophisticated for that ......Anyway, I know I do not need another parrot but I would love to have Mihjo. He is 999.00 with a cage that is way to small for him and while I'm not going to run out and get him (I got no money), I will continue to visit him and I will think more on it as time goes by. The bird is in a very small store in a very poor neighborhood and awfully big and intimidating so I don't think he'll be going anywhere soon.
Dave........I don't know if you're just pulling our leg or if you really want another bird. If you do, I would definately do what Janie says and just plan it out and do it. If you get another bird you will have lots to focus on for a long while and won't have to think about getting more birds for awhile. Dittobird is the top dog in the house, he will adjust amazingly well over time :D .

Wheeeeeee!!!!
A GCC, they are little charmers they are. Good thing you didn't pick him up. If you did, he would have snuggle up under your chin and made these little cooing noises like Cappie did to me. You see what happened with that don't ya?????
One of the best mistakes I ever made was picking up Cappie. Go ahead Dave, pick him up ;)

Laura,
If this African Grey stays there for a while, you might be able to make the owners an offer (with or without the cage) and see what they say. In order to turn a profit, birds really need to sell fairly quickly. When I bought Georgia, the store dropped the price almost $500.00 because she was no longer tame/handleable and she had been there for over 2 yrs. Something is still better than nothing.

Laura, holy moly, I hope you can get him eventually! That is my number one "I want one" parrot but I got into this pet bird business too late in life to consider a Grey unless I could find someone who would take him when I'm over the Rainbow Bridge. :D
I like Linda's advice......maybe they will drop the price! :)

Dave, weren't you just saying in another post somewhere on this very board, that you felt bad leaving Ditto alone for even a few minutes?
Just think how happy the Dittobird would be if he had a little feathered friend to talk to ... while you're at work ... ALLLLLL DAAAAAYYYYY LOOOOONNNNNGGGGGG. Go get the bird. So what if you're broke? That's what credit cards are for.

Dave,
I feel your pain :( Today at the birdfair, the breeder my brother got his B&G from offered me her one and only GCC to "take home & pay me later". You have know idea how BAD I wanted to say "YES"!!! I had to run from her booth. Then she let me hold that baby - "I do not need another parrot"!!

Linda: Thanks for the tip on the African Grey :). I'm thinking if he's still available in mid Oct after our vacation I'll make an offer. If he's gone it wasn't meant to be :)
I would like to know if thinking about getting him is too much. I do have 19 lovies and a Meyer's parrot. I work full time + but I work close to home and a lot of days I am home late in the morning or stop by during the day.

I really would love to have another bird. But I really can't do it right now. Ditto say's I barely have enough time for him. Besides, if he couldn't stand another human touching me (even though she was his owner and had been bonded to her before he came here) imagine what he'd do with another birdy. It'd be world war III.
Plus the GCC's cage would have to be the same size as ditto's, so there's another $300. If I did that I'd have to eat the birds.
And I don't have credit cards, Like Perran said, they're evil. :p
Good thing you didn't pick him up. If you did, he would have snuggle up under your chin and made these little cooing noises like Cappie did to me. You see what happened with that don't ya?????
Trust me I know all about that. About a year ago there was a Sun Conure at that store. I was in awe of him and the woman who owns the store came over and picked him up (he wasn't in a cage, he was hanging out on some branches in a play area with the B&G Macaw that belongs to the owner). She started to ask if I'd like to hold him and she got as far as would you and he hopped right on to my shoulder and looked me right in the eye. If Barb hadn't dragged me outta there, the house would be much louder right now. Sadly he was gone when I went back a week later and they haven't had another since.
I keep trying to convince my brother to let me use his huge old barn to raise conures and lovies and we could plant plenty of millet and veggies on the 8 acres he has..... But no dice, even though he's a bird lover. He says conures are too loud. Like there is such a thing as a parrot that's too loud.

Dave, when it ain't right, it ain't right! :D I gave it a lot of thought before I added these two and I would seriously never try to talk someone in to adding another one or two. It IS always tempting cause they are all so cute (all parrots!) but time, money and the existing bird all play a huge part in the decision of adding more. When the time is just right, you'll do it and if that doesn't happen, you and Ditto will live happily ever after! :D
P.S. Oliver does NOT like the new boys! :D

I totally agree with Linda on that one! It's that "certain point" that I wonder about! :D Ten? Twenty? Fifty????? With ONLY three, I'm a fur piece away from that certain point but if I had, let's say 20, I'd imagine that 5 or 10 more wouldn't make a huge difference. My husband might not agree with my thinking process! :lol
linda040899
09-18-2005, 10:10 AM
As numbers increase, cleaning/feeding processes become more streamlined. In my aviary, I have at least 53 food and 53 water dishes in use on a daily basis. I have a complete back up set of each. If a food dish is dirty, I simply remove that dish and fill up a clean one to replace the dirty one. All dirty dishes go in my dishwasher. If I dealt with each dish singly, I would never get done.
I've given up counting the number of lovebirds I have. I really can't tell you off the top of my head. I would have to "take inventory" so to speak, and knowing that number doesn't make any difference to me. Let one bird be missing and I know immediately. I can't give you a collective number but I know exactly how many birds are in each cage!

There were a few more than usual Caiques at the fair. The breeder my brother bought his B&G from bought two, a white-bellied & BlackCap. She already has a BlackCap named Piper, who I just fell in love with last year. I hope to get one eventually. We saw lots of babies this time.
I did get a t-shirt that says "I'm a Birdie Mom". :D I also got a pair of Lovebird socks to wear around the house. And my best buy was Camicide!! I bought a gallon and I'm gonna spray my new house before I move my babies. :)

Yep, the Camicide was a great find, thanks for telling me where to find it. :) If anyone in GA is looking for it, this supplier is from GA and I'll give you their e-mail address.
I got to admit, those Caiques were adorable and I can easily see why you'd want one! Me, too! :D
Oh, BTW, Linda....they had the most beautiful Princess of Wales. First time I've ever seen one. Lots of Ring Necks and they were gorgeous. Very, very few lovebirds and not a single WF violet!

I cashed two pay checks from my pitiful little part-time job and used that and my debit card for my things yesterday. I walked out of that bird fair with $7.00! I bought so many toys that my bird room looks like Christmas morning! :lol I can justify that because I saved as much as 50% on many of them that I'd buy at the Aviarium. These vendors sell to the Aviarium so I got a much better deal and the way that Big Boi and Shy play with toys and destroy them, :lol, I stocked up! Till.....the next bird fair in December! ;)

I'm glad everyone had a great time at the bird fair :D. I'm completely envious and wish I didn't live so far away. My poor birdies are in desperate need of new toys. With my lack of money, living in HAwaii where toys are EXPENSIVE, and having so many birds we've taken to giving them lots of natural things like plants, etc to chew on. Plus, I change the toys around when I power wash the cages so the birds don't have to have the same toys in their cages.

Alex is a BFA and I won't dispute that statement! I adore Amazons! They are very straight-forward birds and I never find myself guessing what Alex wants. :)

If it's an honest offer and the BFA is a female, go for it. If not, you can tell your boss that his Amazon would have a wonderful home with me....... :)

If he was serious, I'd take the bird in a heartbeat. It sometimes gets on his nerves though. It calls his name all the time in a rather annoying tone that he learned from hearing his wife do it.

Alex mimics my laugh with accurate perfection! Ask anyone who has been talking to me and has hear her in the background! Alex laughs and I can help but laugh, which only makes things worse..........
