I am so excited...I answered an ad about a G&B macaw that needed a new home....and the owner offered me to her for free along with her cage and perch since I seemed like a "perfect" candidate to be Angel's new Mama...

So hopefully by this weekend...Angel would be here safe and sound!!

Oh yeah...I also succummed to the darkside and splurged on a new feather friend...I was totally ripped off by writing a check for $550 for her...but she is SoOOooO worth it! She's a black capped conure who is so sweet and cuddly!!!

Ahhhh...I'm going to have to sell my panties soon to be able to feed and care for my little babies!

WOW! One large parrot is a huge commitment, but two at one time is unimaginable. Congrats on your new family members. Just be prepared because they are a 10000000000 times smarter than lovies and very very very destructive. Let's not even talk about the big beak thing  .

And that Laura is why I am sticking with Budgies and lovies. Baggy gets me hard enough can not imagine a bigger beak.

The big beaks on larger birds aren't so bad... lovies grab and grind, big birds just amputate. :lol just kidding. congrats. I love my little ones because they are entertaining little clowns, but my eclectus is really my pride and joy. having a larger parrot is an amazing experience. having 2 however, you are a brave person.

Thanks for a great laugh! :D

I've never had a bite from a large parrot but you can bet your life it would scare the poop out of me! :omg:

Cookie still hasn't gotten me good, but he bit a big chunk out of my husband's cheek  . Of course, he doesn't really pay attention but I have both eyes securely on Cook everytime he flies to my shoulder or near my hands .

The worst part is Cookie is not mean, he's just not socialized so even his love nibbles break skin :omg: .

congrats on the new babies!
I think you got a great deal on the caique. They don't breed well so the ones at the bird store near me usually cost about $900. Sounds good to me (the deal you got).
Congratulations!

The blue and gold macaws are soo beautiful. I saw a baby in the petstore not too long ago, and really wanted to take him home. :( But congrats on both new family members. :)

If it was a caique then she got a wonderful price…but she said she got a black capped conure…which normally run around $200 to $250 from breeders. So I agree that she wrote a high check…but since she got the B&G I look at it as it all balances out ;). How old is this B&G, and why were the owners getting rid of the bird? What type of behavior problems are you taken home with it?

With larger birds, the volume increases. A Macaw and a Conure will certainly make some noise for you. Bigger beaks are capable of a bit more damage than that of a lovie. I have been bitten many, many times by lovebirds and I've learned to just take it or avoid it, but our Gold Cap Conure as well as the Senegal can reaaaaaaaalllllyyy bite. I will have a permanent scar from the Senegal, hence my hesitation to add anymore larger birds to my flock for now. Of course, our Senegal is an re-homed bird and does have his issues....so just do the research, get as much info as you can on the B&G from the previous owner. Ask if you can the previous owner's vet to get the medical history and be prepared for anything. With all that said, congrats on your new additions and good luck!

Thanks guys, as always!!

Yeah...the macaw can be DEAFENING loud! When he talks, its not that bad, but when she screams, the hair on my neck raises and I get goose bumps cause she sounds like a woman screaming for her life!

I am definitely scared of her beak, esp. since the owners showed me her huge bruises! However, although I did not say anything when I saw it, I did see how the owner interact w/ Angel, and how it was against a lot of things I've read...For instance, when Angel goes to lunge at her, instead of ignoring her, or using other appropriate techniques, she'll take a newspaper and even, though it was lightly, still whacked her across the beak....she also said she she has taken a broom to Angel before....so...Angel's going to be a bit of work.

I am going to wait at least a month before trying to handle Angel, and definitely stick train her first. I am also going to get a pair of welding gloves and remember to close my fist when I go to get her as I like my fingers!

lol. However, my conure is in the pyrrhua group, so is VERY quiet!! The only time he really make any noise is when I cover him for the night, he whines, and when he's "talking" to the lovies...and that's only little chirps! He also is so sweet!! Even w/ a full blown molt going, and at "that age" of 7 months, he's so sweet!! Like last night, he wanted to sleep on his gym, and I wouldn't let him, so made him step up. He refused, so I forced him to, and he nibbled on my fingers as a way of rebelling...My lovies draw blood..my conure just nibbles and kinds of whine!

He's so adorable!
