Two of my babies are going to their new homes soon. Their new momma's want to know whether they have a Tom or a Jane. So I took them down to my resident bird lady and asked for a DNA test (she has the paper work and cards there plus I don't like to make anyone bleed :very_sad: ) but she hemmed and hawed and said that they probably wouldn't be able to match their DNA to anything since they are part Fischers and part Blackmasked.

Is this true?

I've never worked with hybrids before, at least not for sexing purposes, but each bird inherited DNA from both species. I know Avian Biotech asked which species so I would probably use the species that the bird looks most like. The other option is to put down species as Masked Fischer's hybrid and see what the lab has to say. They will do the test if it's possible. If they can't do the test, you should get a refund.

it won't be a problem, the DNA will give the gender regardless of how many species are in the mix.

That's what I was thinking. I don't see what species has to do with gender.
