i am the owner of 2 peach faced lovebirds. i do not know if its due to their chirping every morning but a week ago, a green bird with orangey red beak flew in. i think it is a lost parrot. should be a parrot. medium size(about 3-4 times of my lovebirds), resemble the bird picture at the top of lovebird plus community plus the link i found below that got a picture that resemble it.
by the way, the pupils of its eyes can contract and expand in size while looking at you.

i have caged it as i worry that it will not survive on its own but i am not sure how to really take care of it. because it should be a parrot and obviously not a lovebird.

can anyone offer me advice & help me identify what bird is that? any forums i can go to? thanks!

The bird in the link is an Alexandrine. Usually when they are afraid or intimidated they will dilate their pupils.

Just make sure you give this guy plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, seed and water.

Hi,

Make sure he has plenty of water, and seed, and pellets available to him. Seed and pellets are the two things he most likely has had available to him to eat, so if his owner did not give him fruits and veggies, the seed and pellets should at least be familiar.

I just wanted to caution to keep this bird totally seperated from your lovebirds. He needs to be in a room as far away from them as possible, and wash your hands after doing anything with him, even just touching his cage. This is just to be on the safe side that he can not transmit anything harmful to your lovies.

I am sure someone is missing this bird, and will very grateful that you have taken him in. You can call your local humane society to let them know if anyone calls to inquire about him they can contact you. You can also post found notices in your local grocery, in your neighborhood, and your local petstore. There are also lost and found websites, so you can check those out also. Here are links to a couple.

I hope you do find his owner, as I'm sure they are heartbroken over this loss. He is extreemly lucky to have found someone who knows birds, and I'm sure he is scared from being out in the wild, so do be careful with him. Let us know how he is doing, and if you are able to locate his owner.

Oh my.....that is an amazing story! I was at a bird fair last week end and saw an Alexandrine for the first time. I was with my breeder and she explained the eye "pinning" to me, something I'd never seen.

Lori's advice is great and I have nothing to add. Hope you can find it's owner. My neighbor recently found a cockatiel in her yard and did locate the owner about 2 weeks later. That tiel had found it's way here, 20 miles from home. I think the owner located the bird because my neighbor had called area vet's and bird clubs. Good luck....hope this all works out!

Wow,

While looking for more information on these beauties, I found an ad for a lost Alexandrine in IL, you are not by chance from there are you?? If so here's a link to the ad, if not, try doing a search for lost Alexandrine's also in addition to checking the lost and found links I listed, and posting your own lost ad.

Well,

After more investigation I see you are in Singapore, so I guess the guy in IL is not your guy. I do hope the person who lost this bird looks online though, as the links for lost and found are wonderful.

hey peeps, really thank you all for the precious advice.
in fact, after caging the parrot, i did try looking out for its owner but to no avail. in singapore, i think the common way we try to look for lost pets is by putting flyers or pinning their notices under the blocks. so far no one looking for a parrot. i will try look out in the internet.

in singapore, most of us stay in high rise buildings. i happened to stay in the 13th floor when it flew in. my mum happened to finish baking some flour cakes that moment. i think it heard my lovies chirping & landed on one of the poles that we hang out clothes to dry, saw the small cakes & decided to come in for a bite.

when we found it, i think it was too hungry to be bothered with us. i came very close, it dont even gave a hoot. only when i attempt to touch it, it will then move away. i believe it is not use to being hand handled?

anyway, i caged it as i thought it cant be wild since it actually flew in and did not fly off when saw us coming in the kitchen. by the way, it spoke a weird phrase which i dont understand and can meow very well like a cat.

but i think it dont really like me because it will "contract" its pupils & "scream" at me when i come close to look at it(after being in a cage). funny thing is it will meow in response when my kid sis meow to it. probably prefer my sis or it like kids.

i dont know if parrots will feel sad because i heard it making noise that sound like a sob(occasionally in private). do parrots cry? i hope it is not pinning for its owner & feeling sad.

i was thinking is there a possibility it flew over the sea? because i stay pretty near the coast.

will be glad if anyone recommend any forums which can shed some light on this parrot. i can get along well with my lovies with occasional bites & i know nuts about this parrot & i dont dare to try touching it because i fear for my fingers as its beak seems much bigger than a lovie.

Could be either an Alexandrine or a female IRN. Can you post any more photos?

Does it have a red patch on the wing?

If it has a red patch on the wing, it is an Alexandrine, if not, it is an Indian Ringneck. Only males get a ring around their neck and this usually occurs between 2-3 years. I would say your bird is Female

If it has red feathers under its wings it might be a male eclectus. you may want to check out the following site:

http://www.landofvos.com/eclectus.html

and look at the pictures. it might help clear up the mystery. If it is an ekkie, they are native to the islands of the south pacific and some areas of eastern asia. I doubt one could fly as far as singapore though I'm not sure about it.

please let us know if you find out more.

If I remember correctly, ringnecks do not get the "ring" until they are about a year old.

hey peeps..

thanks for the replies. :)
sorry for the confusion >o
after checking out on the net i should believe its an indian ringneck(minus the ring). so i shall assume its a female.
sorry for no pics at the moment to post as my cam is still with my cousin & the pics i took with my handphone doesnt turn out clear enough. i will post when i can get a decent pic.
anyway still no news of any owner. wondering if its an abandon bird.
its rather nippy & hate to be stared at since i think it 'screams' to show she dont like it.
not really use to its noise, rather loud since i live in an apartment(guess all my neighbours know i got a new bird) but she dont exactly makes noise all day. she seems to prefer being on its own unless you happen to have food with you. guess shes only interested to make friends with food.

i was wondering if i should send her to a vet since i think she naps a lot. but maybe due to boredom since i got no toys for her. there was once she scares the **** outta me when she practically lies on the bottom of the cage. i thought she was dying. but when i took something to attract her attention she actually turned aggressive to try attacking.(she does not like foriegn objects)

she is a weird bird or i know nothing about parrots

if you are willing to take her to a vet I would highly recommend it. Not only will it get her checked to see if she's healthy, but if you have other birds you will have a clearer idea of whether she poses a danger to your existing flock. also, the vet might know of an owner who is missing looking for her. either way, a quarantine from your current flock is definitely called for. she is probably scared out of her mind right now and that could explain the attitude problem. she also might have been feral for some time and no longer used to humans. remember, prey have eyes on the side of their head (generally) and predators have eyes in front (generally). so staring straight at her is the move of a predator eying up food and that could be causing her reaction. good luck.

Only Males get the ring around their necks and that happens when they are 2 years old, whereas Alexandrine take 3 years.
