View Full Version : A very polite lovebird
I introduced figs into Blu's diet this weekend. I gave her a portion of fig today, she looked at it, had a taste, looked at me and my husband and said "thank you!" Then she went on devouring it.
It's the first time my husband heard her say thank you. The look on his face was precious.

Cute! Very cute!!! :D
I did not have success with figs but since they are trying so many new things now, I'll try them again. If they eat them, I'll be pleased, if they "thank" me, I'll drop dead! :D

Elle,
Figs are wonderful food! Just ask my Abbys! :) Figs are high in calcium so my Abbys each get 1/2 fig each day. They don't eat the rind/skin, just the inside which is small seeds. My Princess of Wales thinks they are quite a delicacy, as well!

Why won't my birds - who will eat ANYthing - touch figs?

I cut mine in quarters, as Abbys tend to be messy. Small pieces are not quite as bad, but the walls still have fig stuck to them! Perches are used for wiping beaks so I clean perches every week, sometimes more than that.
What kind of figs are you offering, Jennifer? I seem to have the best luck with Calimyrnas.

I'm gonna have to find some figs. Ditto loves fresh stuff. He'll ignore millet for sugar snap peas and carrots so I bet figs would be a hit too.

Linda, that is the type fig I tried with no success but, that was over a month ago and they are now trying so many new foods that I'm going to try the figs again. I wish I could buy them in smaller quantities since only two would (hopefully!) be eating them. *I* ate nearly all of the last package.....hated to see those expensive figs go to waste! :D

Jennifer,
My birds think ALL fruit is evil  I do have some figs and I thought about trying them on Daisy & Piper. They are braver lovies.

They have to be fresh though. All the veggies must be fresh. Don't even think of trying to sneak the frozen ones in there, they'll get tossed! :lol

Absolutely.
I went to th organic store once thinking I was being smart, and bought in bulk.
Cut and diced for hours.
Put some in the fridge and the rest in the freezer.
After the frozen ones were thawed. We offered them to Trix multiple times. The look was priceless as if to say "You gotta be kidding me. I wouldnt eat this for all the millet in Africa!"
Needless to say now we make frequnt trips to the organic grocer. Thankfully its only 5 minutes away.
:)
Trix is so spoiled! To quote Z28Taxman... "When I die can I come back as a lovie?" (Im pretty sure thats a quote... if not its paraphrased) ;)

Mine used to eat figs but then I didn't give them any for awhile and the last two or three times I've offered them they were a no go.
Janie: The health food store I go to sells the figs in bulk so I only get a couple at a time. You might want to check it out if you have one near you :D

Laura, thanks so much for that tip! I've got to find a GOOD health food store. The GNC stores here don't have squat for birds! I'm also looking for the GSE and Lori buys that in her health food store so I figure that in a city the size of Atlanta, surely there's a good one somewhere!
Perran, I am not jealous because I have the sweetest lovebird in the WHOLE WIDE world. Honest, I do! :D Doesn't eat well, won't play with toys but SWEET, SWEET, SWEET! :D
