Grrrrrrrrr...... >: Took one of Miyagi and Hikaru's beautifully grown babies aka Sherbet to the vet yesterday seeing as I am taking her (I suspect she's a girl anyway hehe) to a new loving family today. I decided to give my two babies to new homes (heartache...) because I don't really have the space at the moment to properly look after four birds. I'm really happy about the new family for Sherbet though, they are lovely people and I believe they will care as much for the little one as I do!
BUT, to get back to my vet experience.....grrrrrr.

The only avian vet in my part of the world is a 40min bus ride away, so I've opted a couple of times now to go to the vet closest to me without any problem seeing as Katherine, my vet, is really experienced with birds anyway. However, yesterday Katherine was on holiday and I thought, seeing as it's only a wing clip, I would take little Sherbet to the vet they had on duty. Big Mistake! :( She couldn't handle the bird at all - did not use a towel in order to mitigate her own incompetence and was plain rude when I told her that I wasn't sure about her method of wing-clipping. (She only clipped one wing, and refused to do the other saying that that's what the book says! I'm certainly not an expert but that didn't sound right to me...) She clipped the wrong feathers and far to high for my liking as well putting the bird through an enormous amount of stress. I burst out crying in the reception area haha, drama queen that I am, and needless to say I did NOT give her my second baby for a clip...still nameless poor thing.

Well, Sherbet is still happily flying around....not surprisingly. Her messed up clip didn't even slow this lovie down. Anyway, just felt like ranting a bit. Will definitely make sure Katherine is in if I ever take one of my fids again! For now Sherbet will go to her new owners today and they will probably have to wait for this mess to grow out first before taking her to another vet for a proper clipping. I'm hoping there won't be any blood feathers... :very_sad:

Here are two pics of the little ones from a week ago. They are two beauties! :)

I can sympathize with you on incompetent vets who think they know what they are doing but they must have been sleeping through all the classes they took! I would probably call the vet's office when Katherine is in, explain to her what happened and ask for a credit for the visit and work done. The vet who performed the service did not listen to what you wanted and I refuse to pay for those kind of services.

Hopefully, the bad wing clip will grow out and you can have it done the right way.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal at the vet's office.

But those babies are stunning!! I just can't get over how gorgeous they are!

In some cases, an irresponsibly done wing clip could do far more harm than good. ..Clipping one wing yet not the other could even result in serious injury. As Linda suggested, I would certainly request credit be applied to your account. ..Thats if you actually paid of course. ...Can I ask what this vet charges for a wing clip? ... Although I find it hard to believe there's ANY book that recommends a "one wing clip", it would be a pleasure if we could borrow hers. .. At least that way we'd learn exactly which procedures NOT to perform.

Beautiful birds BTW!................:)

Thanks for the sympathies (and the compliments on these goodlooking fids! :) )

I will definitely phone and hear what can be done. It was only £8 ($12) but I suppose asking for the credit is one way to make them realise they will lose money if they don't employ good vets...

It might be my violent streak but if I knew which book she read her method in I'd like to knock her over the head with it. haha. (In my imagination anyway).

I'm also sorry about the vet visit and I join the general skepticism of there actually being a book that recommends only one wing getting clipped . And I just have to do this:

SQUEEEEEAAAALLLLLL!!!!

Oh those babies, so, so cute. I want the littlest one. Sigh, time for mantra: I don't need another parrot, I don't need another parrot, I don't need another parrot.....

That's what it's about. it's not about the money, its about the principle of the vet did not know what she was doing and shouldn't have taken on the case. She should have asked for help from someone else in the practice.. it's not about ego's, it's about providing the best care for the animals they see.
