Well its being a long time since i posted in this forum all was going great until last week, Hannah started laying eggs in the bottom of the cage...at first i gave her a nestbox but then retired it she kept laying eggs even when i wasnt giving her anything to do so, -.- then Kriek escaped during the night while everyone was sleeping i looked for her for 2 days in a row... since in my country there isnt such thing as PEtsmart or Petco my only hope was to tell people around my building and show them a picture of her...Well 2 days later i found her body partially eaten by a cat :( :very_sad: and like if that wasnt enough last Friday morning (just 3 days after i found Kriek's body) i woke up to find Chester was dead, took him to the vet for a necropsy vet said he died probably of a heart attack... :very_sad: :( Hannah stopped laying eggs the day that Chester died and the 3 she had laid she broke one of them, the other 2 she didnt cared for them at all, she only sat on a perch and went down only to eat and drink.... other then that she didnt even looked at the eggs... so i took them away....

Well i still got 2 lovies Baylee and Hannah but sadly they dont get along well, last time Hannah bit Baylee's toe and made it bleed :( Kriek knew how to open the door of her cage... even tho i took measures to prevent her from escaping...

I'm very sorry to hear you've lost not only Kriek, but Chester too. .. How awful :(. .. My prayers go out to you. .. As intelligent as all parrots are, hopefully you've managed even further measures to help prevent the others from escaping the way Kriek did. .. With regards to Hannah's eggs, how many days had she abandoned them? ..Can you tell us how long you had let her keep them before taking them away?

She spent 2 days sitting on them for only 5 minutes each day.... and i waited the whole weekend and took them away yesterday afternoon seeing that she only goes down to eat and drink... even yesterday morning one of the eggs was on 'her way' and she pushed it aside, ... after Friday morning (when Chester died) she hasnt laid any egg... also vet said Chester died around 2 am and i found him around 6.30 am Hannah was next to him when i found him...she was chirping at him and preening him....

Once again, this has been a very sad situation for your birds, and you. .. How this will all play out later for your remaining birds, only time will tell. .. Because Hannah will likely grieve for sometime to come (and has been in laying mode), her care right now is of the upmost importance. .. Please, take time to review our "Lovebird breeding" forum. .. Click on the "General discussion" topic and you'll find whats refered to as "Sticky's". .. One in particular titled "Nestboxes for beginners" may help explain some of the behavior you've seen surrounding Hannah and her eggs. .. Specifically, why it appears some hens ignor their eggs from the start of laying can have more than one answer. .. It could be that by pulling her nestbox, or the need to lower her body temperature before incubation, are reasons why she had not stayed put on her eggs. .. Most important, is YOUR decision as to whether or not you allow her eggs to develop full term. .. Should you choose not to care for and house several new lovebirds, a method such as immediately boiling her eggs is the humane way to halt their development. .. Even more important, is that regardless whether you choose to breed or not, she be allowed to carry out her 23 day incubation cycle in hopes she'll NOT produce more eggs shortly after laying her first clutch. ... Last thing you need right now, is a case of egg binding. ... Keep us posted! ............:)

She had a clutch back in march (they hatched all normal Kriek was her daugther) so it was too soon to let her go through another one... i boiled the eggs... also i rearrenged her cage so she can just mourns Chester's death... and so far she hasnt laid anymore eggs...

So really, you've been a step ahead of everything. .. Good deal! .. Might I add, the necropsy, on your part, was also an excellent decision. .. Better to have found nothing than to later find some sort of malady could be affecting your other fids. .. At any rate, thanks for sharing everything. ..By doing so, hopefully others will benefit by exercizing the very same caution as you have with their own breeding practices, and sudden health issues. .. Best wishes for a much brighter future. ... And please keep us updated!...........:)
