Hi everyone,

Some friends of mine are really enthused about getting a bird. One of them has past bird owning experience, but the other doesn't. I told them to read up, and watch the Good Bird inc series regarding training and getting to know their bird. They are concerned about owning a little dog already, and the interaction between the two. They want both pets to be able to roam freely. I believe they will purchase a parrot of some kind. Maybe a lovie.

Any advice for them?

:-)

Hi, I have both and keep both separate at all times. It's just better to be safe and while the dogs are sweet they can still pose a hazard to the birds. I just never bring the birds out when the dogs are upstairs. Just my :2cents:

I live with 2 older Cairn Terriers and neither dog has ever shown any interest in my birds. However, dogs are predators and birds are prey so I'm always watchful that they don't get near each other. Just because the dogs have never shown any interest in the parrots doesn't mean that they never will in the future.

I have a chihuahua/Yorkie mix who has killed 2 of my birds. I wouldn't allow any birds to roam freely, especially a lovie, with a dog in the house. I don't know if it is just Peanut or all lovebirds, but Peanut WILL chase after any animals that are on the floor or couch. If my daughter's pomeranian is upstairs, Peanut will try to land on him and chase him all over. :omg:

I dont have dogs but I do have cats. the only birds in my flock allowed out alone when we are gone are my green cheek conures, but that's only very short periods of time. they stay on their cage if they cant find us and have chased the cats out of the room when we are around to show the cats whose boss. I wouldn't leave them out when I'm not home if I had a dog unless.they were in separate rooms.

Thanks everyone,

I will let them know to keep them apart! The dog has shown interest in the bird already I believe!

:-)

Better safe than sorry!
