View Full Version : Parrots are now being euthanized just like dogs and cats

My local ASPCA has recently announced a euthanize policy for any bird relinquished in poor health as in pluckers, self mutilators and all the rest. They cite lack of funds for veterinary care for these birds, lack of suitable homes able to provide extensive care and lack of space and time to care for these birds. In other words they don't have the money and nobody wants to adopt a self mutiliating bird or sick bird.

This of course really bothers me and I'm sure everyone here on this board. But the reality is that birds are being dumped at shelters and sooner than later the 'kill rate' for birds will be just as high as for our dogs and cats dumped in shelters.

Also the few real and legitimate avian rescues in the tristate area PA, NY, NJ are full and have waiting lists, long waiting lists.

Please think long and hard before buying a parrot be it a budgie or a macaw. They are now being put down in shelters just like dogs and cats. It's a shame.

Also if you are a real bird person and have room think adopt vs. purchase as there are many, many small parrots; budgies, lovebirds, cockatiels, conures available for adoption from traditional dog/cat shelters to include the ASPCA, PAWS and city pound.

I'm not anti-breeding of birds at all but pro-responsible breeding and pro-adoption. Adopted birds bond to a new owner just like a bought bird.

It's sad that any animal has to be dumped and then put down. And to think that exotic birds such as macaws, cockatoos, greys will be euthanized is horror.

How sad. Here in GA there are few bird rescues. But I am not seeing any in shelters here. I recently tried to adopt from a rescue and because I have kids was told nobody will adopt to me. Not giving up though.
