Hope everyone has been doing well! Even though I haven't been posting I still keep track of posts here.
Unfortunately, last week my neighbors who owned multiple Amazons and a Cockatoo lost every fid but one after their 4-year-old opened their outdoor aviary (normally it is under lock and key) because he wanted to play with the birds. Needless to say the birds, fully flighted, took off in a matter of moments before his mother could stop them. After days and nights of searching only one of their Amazons, Mick, was returned after a local shelter called with his band information and the like. I'm sure Atti enjoyed their screaming matches as much as they did. In the very least we hope someone has found them and is taking the process of returning them. Mick was the only banded bird from what I've been told.
Paranoid does not even begin to describe what I am with my pets. All past and current fur babies have been microchipped, worn multiple identification tags, and we've even experimented with GPS collars at one point. Now with birds, you can't exactly put a collar around their neck. Atti doesn't have any type identification on (or in) her and after this unfortunate incident with my neighbor's fids I don't want to take the risk. I've both heard and read about the pros and cons of ID bands on birds but I'd be more than happy to hear the lovely feedback provided here. What about microchipping? I'd think Atti would be too small for a procedure such as that though.
