Hello fellow lovebird lovers,
I would very much appreciate your advice based on your experiences with lovebirds.
I had a lovebird for nearly 20 years who was my constant companion and best friend. Now I am about to adopt again and wondering if an "heir and a spare" might be a good idea, as I have an opportunity for 2 very cute male babies from different breeders. I once read that lovebirds in separate cages, each given lots of one-on-one playtime, affectionate attention, and socialization with their human caregiver, can remain bonded to their human companion rather than bonding to each other. As mentioned above, both birds in this scenario would be males. I selfishly want to remain the one my lovebirds bond to, and wonder if an "only child" lovebird like the 'snugglebug' I had for many years is the only way to achieve this relationship or not. I have seen many lovebirds kept in cages together who are so bonded to each other that they are not much interested in human companionship and I want to avoid this situation.
Any input or advice greatly appreciated!
Thanks very much,
Kathy

I have been struggling with the same question. Ever since I got my wonderful male Lovebird I have been wanting another. I already have a Parrotlet and two Linnies. My Lovebird wants nothing to do with them, and only wants to be with us humans. I still would like another Lovebird, but I'm afraid of how Sunny would react.

A lot depends on the individual bird/birds involved. Sometimes the parrot feels more attached to the human slave than to another of their own kind. Other times, 2 males will get along great with each other and remain friendly with you, as well. As long as they get continuous attention, you should not be left out of the equation.

I've been assuming if I got another one that it should be a male so that my male would be less likely to bond with it. Am i correct?
