lacey's nails have been getting really long and i normally do the nail trims myself with one of my daughters who have been around birds. yesterday my son came over with his g/f (they are both 19). my daughters have been busy with work so i asked my son's g/f if she could help me with lacey, i showed her how to hold her so i could do her nail. i'm feeling really bad because i knew lacey wasn't totally comfortable with her (she hasn't seen her in awhile) but i thought she would be ok..... well when i went to clip her last nail the g/f didn't have a good hold on her and she moved and i ended up making lacey bleed. the one other time i made her bleed i used flour and it stopped pretty much right away. this time i used the flour and it wasn't working. sooooo i'm feeling awful!! bawled last night because i was feeling so bad. my hubby told me he had read corn starch works better.

so my questions are: #1 does corn starch work better and/or quicker?
#2 was it bleeding more because she didn't like my son's g/f and her
heart rate was so high trying to get away from her?

#3 my hubby wants to know... how much is to much blood to lose
before they are in trouble
it stopped bleeding in about five minutes but i was so worried i let her stay up 1/2 hour past her bedtime so i could make sure she was eat and drinking ok and acting normal

thanks in advance :)

The end result of what happened is because your son's girlfriend didn't have a good hold on Lacey and Lacey moved, causing you to short cut the nail higher than you intended. Something like the domino effect.........

Which works better, flour or corn starch? Six of one, half a dozen of the other. The key to stopping the bleeding is to hold the nail and apply mild pressure so the flour or corn starch stays where the vein was short clipped so it can form a clot. There are other things you can use to stop bleeding from a short clipped nail but I know that flour and corn starch are both non-toxic and the area where they are being applied opens from the inside of the body.

How much blood loss is fatal? For lovebirds, 4 ml (cc).

What happened was not your fault and Lacey knows you didn't intend for what happened to happen. Wise decision to push bedtime back a few minutes just to insure that everything was fine. Lacey loves you so be kind to yourself, as well....... :)

thanks for your quick reply linda! i feel alot better knowing i was doing the right thing. she's her normal self today, being her normal velcro birdie self. i was afraid that would effect her attitude toward me. over the last couple months she has bonded even closer to me then she was before if that's possible. company comes over and she really shows no interest towards them, just stays on me. she is also coming around with my hubby now, will let him pet/scritch her head while she's in my hand :)

You were fine and Lacey knows you won't intentionally cause harm. He loves you and the fact that he stays with you illustrates that very well. Your husband is accepted, as long as Lacey is with you.

Several of my larger parrots are like that, especially Harley, my TAG. He picked me out at a bird show and it's like we are joined at the hip since he first laid eyes on me. A trust relationship is an amazing thing and it's earned. There are no short cuts, nor can you force a bird to trust you. :)

Awww, I'm so glad Lacey is ok :) I thank God that Max clips his own nails. I can hear him clicking away at them almost daily. He has a better manicure than I do! Ever since I got him, I don't use nail polish at all :)

Glad to hear Lacey is herself today! Plenty of things happened to me with Bailey were I felt like a terrible mama.

Also same, Maxie! My birds are anti-nail polish. My hands are a-ok as long as there isn't any color on my fingertips haha. :)

Ohhhh, I remember the days when things like this would freak me out! After so many years and things that have happened that caused bleeding, you calm down about it a bit more! I've actually taken Pip to the vet and watch them purposely clip his nail down short to get blood! When she clipped it, he yelled out, so I know that it hurt! :( then he held his foot up for a few days! Pip also bit off my pionus Ivy's toe nail! Can we say "freak out?" She has one less toe nail now and survived it all just fine! It happened on the weekend, so vet was closed and I got the bleeding under control quickly so took her on the following Monday. Foot injuries do hurt, but usually the bleeding is fairly easy to stop. I always used flour and water. Don't feel bad about it, it was just an accident, and all is fine! Pip and Ivy still love each other......even though Pip bit her toe nail off!! He did it years ago though when he was cage territorial and was in his cage when she landed on it. He wouldn't do this now, he's calmed down alot from those days! Pip has also bit one of my cockatiel's toes before too and drew blood. Most people with multiple birds have usually dealt with some sort of thing like this happend at one time or another! All is fine and you'll be more careful the next time! Just be thankful that it all turned out ok, be happy, learn from it and you are not a bad mom!

Thanks for all the replies :) I see lacey cleaning her feet and nails a lot but she don't trim them herself, my guess is she doesn't think they are to long lol. She doesnt mind me wearing polish but tries to pick it off so I don't wear it to often or I wear a lighter shade that doesn't get her attention so quick.

the best to use to stop bleeding is called quickstop it is a powder made to stop bleeding. It can be found in most pet shops and any vets (it is what vets use).
Now that being said there are times i cant use quickstop like if somebirdy bit somebirdys toe and the bitten bird wont come to my calls are is trying to run and hide.
Then since i can not hold them to apply the quick stop i literaly flour bomb them, i figure a mess in the house is better then my fid bleeding!

Worst problem I've ever had with bleeding with one of my macaws was a broken blood feather and it was broken badly. Would have taken too long to take her to the nearest emergency clinic (why do things like this always happen after normal vet hours????) so I had to remove the wing feather! Talk about something hard to remove!!!! It came out but I think human eye teeth are easier.........
