Parrot Fever

Hi everyone,

Have any of you contracted parrot fever from you pet birds?

Reason I ask...my father had an accident...fell and broke his hip about 6 weeks ago. He had surgery and has been recovering ever since (very slowly). The last couple of days he's developed a fever and weakness. Emerg did blood tests, chest X-ray, urine test and everything has come back find. Coincidentally, I've developed a dry cough and am really fatigued. We all give Max kisses and the kisses are returned. Could it be we have parrot fever? How would we know?

From what I understand, if Max has Psittacosis he can give it to you through his shed feathers, contact with his droppings, etc. You can have blood work and a chest x-ray done to see if you've contracted Psittacosis. If you have, make sure Max visits the vet so that he can be treated as well. Hope all is well and that you and your father feel well soon!
