Oops. Seems we missed this...

From most favorite to least favorite: Brown rice. Broccoli. birdybread. Organic barley. Lentils. .. Whenever I go to prepare anyone of these five foods my lovie goes absolutely bonkers in anticipation of them finally being served up. ......

Dittos absolute favorite treat is whatever is in the palm of my hand! Makes it easy to get him to try new foods. Otherwise, sugar snap peas, shredded carrots, popcorn with no butter or salt and Pumpkin seeds.

Absolutely. I also prefer organic rice. Much of which I order via Amazon.com.

At this point, rather than have him thinking your the "only" object of affection, it might be better you provide him with an alternate object of affection besides yourself. That's not to suggest eliminating all objects might not be better (which you could try), but the upside to this is that it may distract him from paying way too much attention to you. Really, much like a female hen lovebird, males can often times exhibit the very same nesty behavior hens do. Add to this your male at 10 months is now reaching full maturity, well, as with any normal "healthy" lovebird, he wants more than anything to reproduce. .. If it were me, I would handle your male lovies behavior much like a broody hens. Increase any kind of physical activities such as, foraging, destroying chew toys (not of the mating type) etc, easing up on wanted affection by you, and the usual decrease in daylight hours as well as certain diet restrictions that primarily limit protein. .. You know, i'm pretty sure as time goes by, things will become more comfortable for the both of you's. .......:)

thank you for the feedback. so you are saying. I should handle him less at. this time? won't that make him less tame with me if I do that? I do not want to lose the bond we have, just ease up on the unwanted attention. Dorothy

The object is to provide for other activities away from you that encourage him to view you more as a flock member as opposed to a mate. For instance, whenever my lovebird attempts to feed or mate on any part of my person, I let him know i'm off limits. .. Far as I can tell, this hasn't taken away from our bond, but instead, has made our relationship more comfortable in that he need not always view me as his mate.

I do let him know in no uncertain terms that I am off limits, he just keeps doing the same things until I can't stand it and put him away. this really shortens his time out with me. I feel bad then. nothing seems to work and I do not want to give him a mate. Dorothy

Do keep in mind this is typical lovebird behavior, and in some cases, may or may not be subject to change. About the best you can do, is continue to modify his environment as well as how you interact with him in ways that might help decrease his desire to mate. Also understand, that no matter what type of program or changes you apply, most all aren't going to offer results right away. .. Another suggestion. Is because each individual lovebird has their own personality, try reading through our "Behavior & Taming" forum (especially the "Sticky's"). There you might find other information that may help as well. Most of all, have patience and just love him for who he is. .....:)

Sorry I've not chimed in on this earlier. It's been a rough holiday for me.

I have a male lovebird similar to yours. He didn't have a lovie mate so I became the object of his affection. I was the "mate." As such, I was also his favorite place for self-satisfaction. Females lay eggs, males show affection for a favorite object. Having him forage more for his food would keep him busier, as he would be in the wild. What I did was give Rio (my male lovie) a female companion. He adores her but as long as I pay attention to him, I still have my pet. It's a win-win if it works. You could also try a male companion. Lovebirds are social and will find a way to do what they want, regardless of how the human slave feels about it. :)

thanks for your input linda. I don't really want to give him a companion but might have to consider it down the road if the behaviour continues lol! Dorothy
